Bought the Farm- need a tractor

Anything can break if you push it past it's limits. Never heard of front axle breaking. Wonder what conditions caused it? Most of the larger deere have a Spanish cast front axle which I know I've put ours to the test, hauling post oak trees to the burn pile.

"In theory" if the load is carried off the ground by the FEL without cheating to get it there the load doesn't exceed the front axle's ability to carry it. :)

I bought a house with 140 acres in central NY...<snip>
I know I want MFWD and with a loader I'm thinking around 50hp at the PTO should do the trick and as of right now I don't think I want a cab as I want to go in the wood for firewood and think it will create more issues than it will help

I'm thinking I'd like to go 10-15 years old to avoid emissions and other such things as I want to maintain it myself.

After I clean up the property I will be having someone else use the bulk of the land and just cleaning the tree lines and wet areas and doing firewood for myself.

After doing a bunch of research I and I think I've narrowed it down and I find common faults with the tractor of choice- what would you guys suggest as a limited frills work horse tractor?

Thanks!
So all we've got to go on for what you want to do now is
clean up the property
and in the end
just cleaning the tree lines and wet areas and doing firewood for myself.
you've got a 25K budget and want a
limited frills work horse tractor
.

This seems a pretty limited set of tasks. No snow movement, no carrying 2,000 lb round bales of hay, no digging ponds, no stump removal, no haying, no plowing furrows.

If you've been cleaning the property with what you said and
Anyway- I've got about 60-70 acres that I'm trying to reclaim for someone to either plant corn or hay so I don't have to mow it-I got about 20 of it done last fall.
then your a third done with your present equipment in 1 fall time period.

And you want to
want to go in the wood for firewood
you want something maneuverable.

As I wrote before I've a M4700, basically about the power halfway between a MX4700 and an MX5200. That size fits in the woods fairly well.
My cousin has a John Deere 90HP 4WD. He won't take it into the woods, it's too big. My M4700 fits, My B7610 slips in and out but can't carry a big log.

Now one thing you have not mentioned is what do you want the $25K budget to cover? Bare tractor? Tractor and some implements? (PHD, rotary cutter, box blade)? Maintenance for a year? Shelter for the tractor?

And remember as you go up in size on most implements their cost increases greatly when you need a higher rated gearbox. So a 7' cutter w/ a 75 HP gearbox costs a lot more than a 5' w/ a 45hp gearbox.

The Kiotos had a sale last year on 50 HP tractors. I think that was in your price range for an open tractor new. Now that sale may be long gone but perhaps they do it periodically.

I have a new 6 rotary cutter. I have a pole barn that is roughly 24x36 to store it in.

25k isnt a rock hard number as Im having some logging done and should be able to put a decent amount down-

Right now I need the loader and the rotary cutter- I can add on later.

I致e e pretty lucky as far as snow removal goes- I get 260 of driveway plowed for $450 a year and I get 10? of snow a year so I dont think It makes sense to spend 4K+ on a blower and have to go out and do it before work and when I get home.
Here is something Ive been eyeballing too:

If I had one piece of advice it would be don't sell yourself short on a tractor. What might be fun for awhile becomes a choir and a half after you've done it a few years. I'd get something that will handle a 10-12' cutter so I agree with ovrszds .
I also drag in firewood. I went from a 3000 lb tractor to a 4000 lb one and cut my skidding time almost in half. I do not make runs longer than 1/4 mile as it becomes too time consuming. My tractor is simply too small for longer turns. A half mile in the woods going about 1-3 mph takes some time. If you are planning to use all 70 acres as your wood lot, get something that will drag in at least 3 stems at a time.
Professionally speaking, the smallest skidder I've used was a 14,000 lb JD. We also had a 24,000 lb Clark. It was so much more productive with the Clark it wasn't funny. Weight will always be your friend.
