leonz: Mine did not have the fuel screen at the tank input. $8.01 later it does, thanks for mentioning it.

rickyd79: Thanks for confirming Grillo will work. Sounds like a better tool as long as I take small steps. :)

I don't think I drop the clutch, more like bumping it, similar to Joel. Been running the flail mower this morning, probably more of a slow dump, can't really bump much since the tractor is also in gear. That is where I will sometimes back up if starting in heavy grass. I guess I've run clutched equipment so much I just don't think about it.
My definition of double clutching is a little different, in trucks before syncro transmissions, we would have to shift into neutral, let the clutch out/ put it back in and put in gear. An attempt to get the gears spinning at the same speed to engage. Took a little bit af practice and feel.

cmyoung2:
Are you saying you start a brush mower (or other heavy attachment) by just dropping the clutch? What throttle setting? I tried to bump it and killed the engine with the 32" brush mower at 2/3 and full throttle. It did not seem possible to start it without successfully double clutching. Here is Joel's explanation: Starting "high torque" implements on walking tractors with STANDARD clutches - YouTube
He does it very smoothly, and it was not easy for me to replicate, in fact I have failed so far.

It is just like a car or truck with a standard transmission:
NO load on the implement-not in heavy brush

1. throttle down to near idle

2. push in the clutch

3. shift gear

4. release clutch SLOWLY

5. push throttle cable up to higher speed

VROOOOM, trade the in rotary cutter in for a BCS flail mower

The person I bought my 853 off of told me this about starting it with the 32" bush mower. "Put it in full throttle, let the clutch out slowly." That's all I do every time, works no problem.

You were asking about steering. I find if I put a little pressure on the handlebars the wheels get a lot of traction, steers much better. The bush mower is really heavy.

Edit: you should check if your bush mower is rotating freely, perhaps it needs new oil/grease?

ottawarob: Have you seen Joel's technique = Starting "high torque" implements on walking tractors with STANDARD clutches - YouTube ?
Mower rotates just fine, I just need more practice. Given that it has been near 100* the last month with no rain the mower may not get used again till October. :(

Thanks for sharing it. I've watched a bunch of their videos but not that one. I haven't had any problems getting into gear using the stock method, but I'll give it a shot. I've only ever stalled it once, starting it in really tall grass where I think the blades were being impeded.

Bleah, here it's rained every other day or more for the last two months, wettest summer in a long time! Would really like it if my field would dry out sometime... :p
