Boulder wall

for the most part dry stacked is OK and lasts well if there is good drainage from behind. Worst part is if/when it moves if some fall out then getting them back IN to place in most cases. Friend built well over 400' in 3 teirs across the back side of his place (up a hillside) cutting out flat driving areas and using the rocks as retainers across the face of the berm.

The above was actually done in revers with the sand & pea gravel set on top of the landscape fabric, then larger stone (fist to Mellon size stuff) tossed into the dead spaces between boulders. He came back through moving some of the mellon sized stuff planting a few Junipers and it really was/is very nice looking

He sold out a year or two back and is living in FLA so I cante get pics (it is all in back of the new owners home.)

I'm no expert. I helped restore some dry stacked retaining walls before, and built my own. There are ways to build to help let the flow of water out. The last wall I worked on had these and it was 6' high. The field above the wall was cut with equipment and they drove the tractor on the edge to cut grass. I know that dry stacked walls will withstand the test of time, and they didn't have geo textile fabric and plastic pipes to use. Like everything else, things come down, get worn out, or have some type of natural disaster.

I can't wait to see your end product. I have seen your projects before on this site and it always looks like quality work. I like to see other people's projects, helps to give me some ideas and new ways of doing things.

Builder, You leave out a lot of information, such as location, which has a lot of bearing... the wall's purpose, soil type, frost, freeze, heaving, rains, etc. I've built a number of stone walls, which have included some small boulders as well. Water will move "through" a stone/boulder wall, until it turns to ice, which will move the biggest "boulder." Is the wall'
purpose to hold back soil and re-direct water drainage, or just a decorative wall. So many questions and little info. HOWEVER, I always build mine in NE PA with 2B (driveway) stone base for drainage, some 2B stone at the wall base, inside the fabric, the 2B stone behind the fabric 1/2 or slightly more of the wall height, then soil. But we need more info.

Plus near done now......

I like your wall, it looks good. What no arches? No curves or pillars? You slacker:D

Thanks,

I'll post up some pics soon. The thing to remember is this wall is not for beauty, just to butress back an embankment.

Not even a hand carved stone that says built by builder? I would think you would want it significant, like maybe a boulder about 6' long and 4' high. And yes, hand carved, not blasted, that is cheating:D

Obviously, I have lead you to believe everything I build looks like something designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Well, my PA friend, this ain't no "falling water", believe me.....

Some of the boulders are pretty big though. All my LB115 could handle...
