has anybody ever made a box blade out of a regular scraper blade by adding end plates to it? if so how? suggestions please

I did, but I didn't brace the ends back to the blade (and I knew I should) and bent the edge of the blade pretty good.

Some companies make ends speciffically for that purpose. Mine was some scrap steel plate (might have been some steel connectors for big beam construction) that happend to be the right size. I welded two bits of angle iron to the scrap it so that it formmed two good connection points to the blade and then torched holes through both and bolted it on while the blade was pretty straight up and down.

If I had run an old fence post or something from the front of the steel plate back to the mid point of the blade, I think it would have worked fine.

I am thinkng of trying again, but with a piece of angle connecting the two end plates together at the front down low to act as a scarifier.

how thick of end plates did you use?

I think they were about 1/4 inch...they were pretty stout and they mounted so solid I thought I could get away w/out bracing them, and that was of course my great undoing. They were fine just going straight ahead, but going around a curve did me in....but come think of it, the plates didn't bend much, it was the blade itself that took most of the damage. I had to heat it up and hammer it back some...not pretty.

how big was your blade and how big was the tractor pulling it?

My tractor is 34 horse and I have a 6 ft Woods blade, which incidently I think is a POS. I have had to reinforce it despite the fact it is supposedly rated for 40 horse.

What model blade do you have? I have the Woods HBL72-2 attached to a Mahindra which is also a 34HP tractor. On numerous occasions while grading my driveway with the blade offset to the right side, I have hung the edge of the blade on some roots that has stopped the tractor dead in its tracks and have had no damage to the blade. In fact, twice I was grading too fast when the blade hung up on a root and the front of the tractor was pulled into the tree before I could step on the clutch and get the tractor stopped. Since the last time that happened I grade a lot slower when I get close to the trees.

Joe,

I dont know offhand what model it is, but it doesn't have as many letters as yours. I understand they make different levels of quality and I assume I am at the bottom while yours is higher, but I still feel a 34 horse machine shouldn't be able to put a noticable deflection in a "40 horse" blade after pushing snow around.

The welds seperated while grading so I rewelded and then built a cage around the unit to hold it together, but then the bolt holding the whole thing together snapped (now that was MY fault) and that was a fun time to drill out.
