From what I've found so far, looks like the Bush Hog MBX-72 / Dirt Dog MBX720 or the Woods BSM72 are the heaviest built aside from a full on industrial hydro unit.

I haven't read much about the roll over models but will.

Don't forget about landpride. Another brand you may want to look at is Befco.

I got a price from my local dealer this morning.....

Bush Hog MBX72 $1125 (hinged rear gate)
640 #
Triple Strap lower link mounts
End Plates 3/8" with 1/2" added at wear points
Scarifier Box 4"x4"x3/8"
Scarifier Size 3/4"x2-1/2"
6 Scarifiers

Woods BSM72 $1075 (fixed) or $1200 (hinged)
680 # (confirmed by Woods Tech Support)
Double Strap lower link mounts
End Plates 1/2" with 1/4" added at wear points
Scarifier Box 4"x4"x1/4"
Scarifier Size 3/4"x2-1/2"

6 Scarifiers
The "L" plate that the scarifiers mount in & push against are 1/2" and the plates that the scarifier pins go through are 7ga

I had read in other older discussions that the weight Woods published was the shipping weight. In fact, there IS a .pdf that has 559# listed for this model, but their product brochure lists operating weight as 680#. The Tech Support confirmed that he seen the same discrepancy and looked up the shipping weight in their system and confirmed that the actual shipping weight is 777#.

***EDIT*** - Called Woods Tech Support and got info above in blue

Trying to find pics of the Woods, but can't find any good ones other than ad pics that really don't show down inside it very good. From what I can tell, the BSM series is made the same as the BSS series, but has thicker end plates with added wear points, thicker 1/4" mold board and optional floating gate.

Looking at pics of the Woods BSS series, I do like how the sacrificers mount on a plate behind the tube rather than through the tube like on all others I've seen.

What do you guys think between these two?

Having used the Woods BSS model a lot, I am partial to that one but the Bush Hog would surely be a sturdy hard working unit. These are after all, simple tools with not a lot to differentiate between manufacturers. You order by width you can pull when full, heavy is good and hope for quality welds which from BH or Woods is assured.

My 60", when full, is at about the limit I can pull going uphill, and maintain traction. You'll have your hands full with a 72" depending on the material it is moving. I don't find the 60" width just barely overlapping my rears to be any problem at all but I don't use the BB for fine grading either. I use it to move material from ditch lines and shoulders back into the roadway.

If you look closely you will likely discover that the Bush Hog is made by Dirt Dog - take a look at this model from Dirt Dog - Dirt Dog. Looks just like the Bush Hog MBX72, even has the same part numbering system.

That's one of the factors that led me to buy the Dirt Dog. I cant speak to the Woods method of scarifier shank behind the tube mounting; but through the tube (which is very heavy wall tbing in this case) is used in many of the units on the market. I'm not affilaited in ay way to Dirt Dog, just seems like a well made product.

Number9L...Oops! I have a BSS65, not a 60. Comments other than width apply. I will add that none of these units are going to come apart. The side rails on the BSS I have are 3/8" and everything is heavy. It simply comes down to your soil type and how much you can pull with your tractive force keeping in mind my comments relative to severe hard pack rock imbedded road bed.

I'm going back up the mountain tomorrow, losing the BB and traveling with the grader blade, to smooth the repairs.

I called and spoke to Woods Tech Support and got some missing info that I was unable to find on the web and edited post #13 with the new info in case anyone else finds this when researching like I am.

At this point I am really leaning to the Woods.

I will add that I have tortured the scarifiers on my Woods unit, no bending, no broken tips. I do pull slow with the tool but have many times encountered an immovable rock with a tip that stops the tractor in its tracks, a considerable force exerted on one ripper.....

For a box blade to work well in most conditions, it really needs to weigh around 125lbs per foot width at the minimum. Your L3800 would do well with a box blade that is 66" in width IMO. I highly recommend one of these, they are a good fit for your tractor.

MtnViewRanch is the TBN Guru on box blades. I pay attention when he writes.

I pull a 60" Bush Hog (brand), 630 pound Rollover Box Blade behind my Kubota B3300SU/33-hp/1,900pounds, with satisfaction. My rear R4 tires are 59" wide. It has been often claimed on T-B-N that Dirt Dog produces the ROBBs that are branded Bush Hog.

In my B3300SU Operator's Manual, under Implement Limitations, Kubota recommends 500 pounds max. box blade but I pull the 630 pounder without problem in Florida sandy-loam. I have aftermarket Stabilworks rigid, pin-adjustable stabilizers, which I substituted for factory check chains, which do not provide enough support when PUSHING dirt with the ROBB. I learned this when I bent factory check chains PUSHING dirt the first time.

I rarely use the rippers in my relatively soft, rock free soil.

I use a $250 HydrauLink air/hydraulic self-contained Top Link when pulling the box blade. Makes blade angle adjustments possible from tractor seat and HydraLink absorbs shock between the ROBB and tractor.

Photos #1 + #2 show the ROBB PUSHING dirt.
