Instead of me explaining it do thread search and u tube. It will allow to fill the box blade and stop from digging too deep, and it will you to dump the load gradually instead fiddling with position lever.

What is draft control?

Your tractor does not have it, not even as an option. You have to get into the Grand Ls & MXs to even have it as an option. The M series and bigger come standard with it.

I'm planning to buy a BB this weekend -- is it OK if it is not wider than my rear wheel base width? I'm looking at a 6' blade; tractor is 75" wide

You have a 3 ton tractor with 64 drawbar HP and enough 3pt grunt to probably pick my tractor up. You should be rocking a 84"+ heavy duty Roll Over Box Blade and laughing down at us plebs with our "toy" machines. /jk.

That said, the main reasons for getting something wider than your tractor are:

Being able to edge without running the tractor over/into whatever you're edging against.

Covering your tracks, so you don't leave an imprint/skip accidentally. Especially problematic in turns.

Also you're probably way over the limit for the HP recommendation of most 72" blades. Try not to turn it into a pretzel if it finds a root or something.

Ha ha! Thanks for the quick reply. I have a lot to learn, and I'll certainly not laugh down at you experts! Truth is, I know I bought more hp than I need, but I got it for a ridiculous price at auction and couldn't pass it up.

Great advice on the practical value of getting a BB that's wider than my tracks. I think I'll be glad I did in the long run -- even if a few more $$ today. Shifting my attention to a 7' or 8' HD blade...

Check everything attachments. They carry a few models in your weight class.

You need to get impliments for the HP you have, not the HP you need. The HP you have will pretzel a flimsy impliment before you can blink if it snags something solid.

Also, it's more of a weight & traction issue than a HP issue. An underpowered heavy machine will shut away slowly putting all the power to the ground. An overpowered light machine will just spin the tires.

Always get impliments equal or wider than your tractor. That way they cover your tracks & can work past the edges of your tires when working close to obstacles.

Either spend lots of money on a high end box blade or reinforce a cheap one. It’s not hard to mangle up a cheap box blade. Lot easier to do before you bend it up. If you back grade reinforce the hitch and weld bolted connections. Brace top of 3pt hitch to back with square tubing. Good time to add a trailer receiver hitch tube to the rear. Very handy later. Added a couple pieces of square tubing supports from the back to scarifier bar. Bucket cutting edge welded to box sides greatly reduces wear. Simple, easy and cheap preventative strengthening adds years of durability and performance.
