Uhaul thing.

If you rent a truck, they don't care. If you try to rent a trailer to pull behind a Ford Explorer--no good.

Too many liability suits is what I heard.......

U-Haul wont rent a trailer to be towed behind an Explorer

Apparently too many roll-overs with the Ford Explorer's, and the lawyers (I assume Ford's) direct the blame to the U-Haul trailer (can't blame the tires anymore?). U-Haul is fed up with the law suits, so is not renting trailers to owners of Ford Explorers. Ford is crying 'foul', but I suspect there must be a good reason for singling out one vehicle.

I just lost a 17 yr old nephew to a Ford Explorer roll-over, sad to say. They must be pretty unstable to gather all the attention they have, over the years.

Stop me if you heard this one before:

About 2-3 years ago, I took my Olds 98 to my service shop for brake work...the advisor wanted to know what I needed, being a smart alec I told him I wanted a set of new Firestones.

His smart alec reply: "Great timing on your part, as this week's special is our big BLOWOUT sale on them".

Another news item after our last snow was pictures of them removing an upside-down SUV from a ditch. After every snow fall, we usually get 2 or 3 in the ditches off Garth Road between here and town (3 or 4 miles). They're unstable vehicles. Too high up, most trucks included. They should keep them down low like Subaru has done. The 2wd drive Toyotas, Chevies and GMCs are car height.

If you need more height down your country road, drive a tractor over it or use the tractor to smooth it out. Take your 4wd tractor out into the fields, not your trucks and cars.

We have a Yukon XL 4wd and it has never even been USED in four wheel drive on pavement, my wife just wanted a 4wd.

I think the real problem with these SUV's ending up off the road is that a majority of their drivers think just because their vehicle has four wheel drive, they are magically immune to the laws of gravity and inertia and friction.

Their owners manuals will tell them: "4wd is not a substitute for driver capability"...SO TRUE.

I used to drive a stretch of interstate heading to/from work. It was in an area where you topped a small hill (this is KANSAS we're talking about here!), approached a major highway interchange, where the speedlimit dropped from 70 to 55. Whenever it was icey, that patch of highway was always the worst.

It got to the point where the local 4x4 club would set up way off in the right of way, maybe 100 feet from the highway, out of harm's way, and sit idling waiting for the next VICTIM to hit that ice, do a series of 360s, go off the road, down the gently sloped road bed, and come to rest in the grassy area.

They'd all fire up, and race to the car to see who go to tow them back onto the road first.

Usually, it was the SUVs and other 4x4s that launched into their play area!

Take care,
Ron

4x4's can do lots of things out on the trails and such, where you would not take a trailer(camping, canoe-ing, ect). The tractor has no suspension, which is a big limitation "Off-Road".

All these 4x4 SUV's and pickups ect go off 'cuase 4x4 gives them a overly large sense of control. The accellerate and turn better than 4x2's. But, when they go to fast, loose traction ect, they slide like anything else. People do not realize that while you can accelerate faster and hold the road better, it don't help a hoot when you try to stop.

They all have thier places, although growing up in Jeeps and doing serious off-roading, I do not understand why so many people buy 4x4's that will never be used; they are a bigger expense to buy and maintain, poorer mileage ect.

The tractor has it's place too. It They would not fare well on Rubicon or in Moab though...

I have a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. This is easily the most capable 4WD (stock) vehicle money can buy (yes, in my opinion, even more so than a hummer... try and fit a hummer through dense woods and you'll understand). So anyway,... I drive to work 40 minutes each way and when we get the big snows, I'm driving along with people tailgaiting me!!! Unreal! Why on easth can't people understand that 15 - 20 foot is not going to be enough buffer if they start to slide. It sickens me.

Regarding the 17 year old who passed away, I am very sorry to hear that. I live 20 miles south of Slippery Rock PA (not meant to be funny, just a coincidental name). Anyway, they seem to be lossing 2 or 3 kids a year for the last few years to auto accidents. It is uncanny. I think the age should be raised for licensing, but I'm sure some would disagree, with good points too. I guess I'm rambling... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

You made a fine choice in a vehicle...a REAL 4wd. Hummers...overpriced, fat, ugly gas hogs. I think I am a fair wheelman, for over 30 years I drove straight trucks up to 33 tons gross weight all over Michigan and into other states through all sorts of weather and road conditions including near blizzards in the UP of Michigan in the dead of winter. Never got a citation, nor stuck, nor had an at-fault accident.

I considered myself a professional driver, but I missed a lot of accidents because I felt the majority of the other vehicles on the road were piloted by careless fools who wanted to play "bumper car". So I operated my vehicles accordingly.

IMO, it's too easy to get a driver's license. And I will shut up and climb down off my soapbox for now.
