Goose - if there's plenty of meat left on the pads (i.e. it's not the wear indicators as LD1 has noted), then brake squealing is usually due to vibration of the pad. Did you use the anti-squeal lube on the pads? There's usually a little packet with new pads, but you can also buy the lube separately.

OK I definitely have some confusion about this. I thought that the lube was only for the sliding parts of the brakes and NOT for the friction parts. If anybody can shed some light on this I would be happy to listen. Is this the "Brake grease" or is this something different? The only stuff I have seen that goes directly on the pads is some kind of spray that supposedly only temporarily fixes the squeal.

Sorry to be vague. The anti-squeal lub that I'm referring to is intended to go on the metal sides of the pads where they contact the piston, and the ears where the pads slide in the caliper bracket, not on the friction surfaces. This is intended to eliminate squeal which is really high speed chatter of the pads against those surfaces.

My brakes only squeal in reverse at very low (idle) speeds. Do you think it will help fix that? I did use the grease they included on the pads but only where it contacts the caliper, not on the back that contacts the piston.

Regardless of ridiculous radio ads that tout brake squealing as "bad" there is nothing malicious to fear.

Brakes that squeal loudly so pedestrians can hear you coming a mile away might want some checking into.

Brakes that squeal cold are NOT an issue.

I work on brakes for a living and have had good luck with a product from Gunk called brake squeal treatment M725. Comes in a spray can and gets sprayed directly onto the rotor and pad surfaces. I use the stuff more as an anti-corrosion product that really keeps those brake rotor webs from rusting up.

Try some, Fred

Regardless of the poor reviews you might see on Amazon's website I have used this for 2 years with excellent results.

Brake squeal is generally a high frequency vibration, a very rapid catch and slip, if you will. So lubricating parts that can't, or shouldn't be, bound together- the problemativ parts - will usually eliminate it. A lower frequency chatter can wear parts, but as Fred says, a squeal from high frequency vibration probably isn't going to cause any real problem other than a headache, so only at low speeds and only in reverse could be ignored. I'll bet it's pretty annoying though.. :)

I will also note that I typically use cheap organic pads. The $20 a set type. Autocraft, duralast, napa, etc. The cheap pads from autozone, oriley, advance I have never ever had an issue with.

I have never ever gotten a pad from NAPA that didnt squeal. From the time they were new, til time to replace

Do you have the e-brake inside the rotor style? if so they may be adjusted a tad tight or there is debris floating around inside the hat. They squeel in reverse because the pads 'cam' over a tad when rotated backwards.
