Brand new 2538 pops out of gear. Dealer has had it for a month.

I bought a brand new Mahindra 2538 with a loader. While using a bush hog
down hill, the range shifter begins to move forward until it pops out of gear.
This thing only has 17 hours on it. The dealer has had it for nearly a month now.
They say they are ordering parts then have to order a gear so on and so forth.
The bottom line is I bought a brand new $20,000 tractor but am still using my
poor old Oliver 550. At least it can still get the job done. A 50 year old Oliver
doesn't have any trouble going up and down a hill, why can't a new Mahindra.
I've seen really good things about Mahindra...that's why I bought one. But,
I'm not impressed so far. I really hope this thing is not going to become a constant
problem. It sure would be nice to use my new tractor. Oh yeah...IT'S IN A
THOUSAND PIECES!!!!

At least they're trying to fix it. Kioti wants me to prove that my tractor pops out of gear.

Upate - Tractor has 60 hrs and has popped out of Middle Range 4 times. Discussed again with dealer. Said they were ready to fix it and new gear being made to solve problem but he didn't have part number for it yet. Said have
to split the tractor to fix it. I had arranged for dealer to do the initial 50 hr. service (about 14 hrs. late) and was within 90 days of purchase so transportation to and from would be covered if I opted to have warranty work done now.. Said the problem would be covered under warranty for full 7 years so whenever I wanted for them to fix it they would oblige, but lose the free transportation if after 90 days. I couldn't stand the thought of my new tractor being split (mechanic said would have to be split twice, I guess the back half need to be split further) and really didn't want to be the first one to have this repair so after a night of pondering decided to just get the initial service and wait a while on the warranty repair, probably till next winter. That way they will probably have been through the procedure on another tractor and maybe that will help with mine. I have lost the free transportation for the warranty work I suppose. Initial service was done last week and back home now. I asked if Mahindra going to issue a recall on the 2538 because of the problem and he said didn't think so, he thought they would fix em as the issue presented itself. Mechanic said it was drive train issue and not a wear issue so be warrantied full 7 yrs. Sure hope someone would report and review after having the repair work done on their tractor. Still love the tractor. Dealer has been up front and accommodating about the matter. I just dread the thought of splitting my new tractor though. Seems like that has potential to create more problems.

Did you ever have it done? What was the outcome?

First thing I noticed is that Mahindra does not paint the insides of the transmission, inside epoxy coating keeps oil from weeping through the cast iron.

The insides of industrial engines, metal lathe gear heads are all mostly painted inside to keep oil weep at a minimum.

GM [ Pontiac Motors ] used to water test each block and weld up [ cast iron stick weld ] any sand holes/etc.. did not ' paint them '. But it is probably faster just to paint over the imperfections than to spend time welding them up. Either way, the leaks are fixed..... Sure is purty painted, though.... :)

The India based castings are generally painted inside. I don't think the Korean/Japanese castings are painted, but we have not had issues with casting porosity allowing leaks through the casting. Perhaps the casting technology/process is adequate that painting is not needed. But I do thing the yellow interior looks pretty cool.....

I've rebuilt engines of AMC, Ford, Mopar, Triumph and Honda. Never seen one painted on the inside.

My Ford 3000 and My 554 Rhino tractors were both internally painted, thought it also cut down on rust caused oil contamination (condensation) when the cases are thermally cycled.?.

heard it also promotes oil shedding and oil draining, possibly to also lock down any remaining casting sand..

Never painted the inside of a block for fear the paint would eventually peel and end up in an oil pick up screen...

mine has popped out mowing and going down a hill. i simply thrown my hand on the lever and have not had an issue since. After reading this thread, I would say it mine may have something to do with the detent. Personally not too concerned about it, just throw my paw over there when heading down hill. Very happy with my machine and have come to know it pretty well, what it likes and doesn't. not much it doesn't. just passed 200 hours

If you can rest a hand on it and keep it in gear, you are correct, it just needs a stronger detent at most. If it has too much endplay in a shaft and is walking out of range because of that, you can't hold it in. Even with a strong grip.

My 2538 popped out twice. Both times from M range. Both times I am sure I didn't set it well. Both times were under 10 hours.

Since then, I make sure I am well in gear, and have not had a problem over 30+ hours and I live on a very steep property.

The range selector has also become smooth with a few hours on it, it was very tight and notchy off the dealer floor.
