I wonder, once a repair is set for this problem if Mahindra will contact all 2538 owners like auto mfg's do? It could be a very dangerous problem. I have a rather steep section I have to bush hog that has a straight drop off at the end. I back down, then pull up, back down...etc. I do this in low and 4x4, of course, but if it came out of gear there it'd be real trouble. The problem is when it comes out of gear, 4 wheel drive is also lost. Plus, neither of my 2538s have/had very good brakes. Not that big of a deal, it's a hydro...until it comes out of gear, then it's rear brakes onl
I would hope they do. It's good to hear they have a solution, now they need to correct those previously sold. I think Dave has described previous recall situations from Mahindra, so I think they will have some sort of bulletin or recall. At the very least, they should give their dealers the details on how to repair this so more tractors aren't unnecessarily split.

update pops out of gear. dealer came and drove tractor, popped out twice for him.he suggested possable detent problem. will still have to split tractor to fix. hope they get new improved parts.not early made ones that may have same issue.looking at parts pic looks possible that a improperly machined detent notch in shift rail could cause problem. with tractor parked and engine off it seems that shifter comes out of mid position easier than hi or low.
my dealer drove 2 hour round trip just to drive my tractor. how many would do that?

That is a good dealer. If it is a detent issue, then you will be able to hold the shifter in range by hand without too much pressure. If you can do that, a stiffer detent spring or a different shape notch in the detent mechanism should fix it. If you can't hold it relatively easily, then the problem is more complex.

Has anyone with this issue tried to hold it in gear yet? We sell quite a few 2538's and we have yet to have this problem arise, but we did see it a few years ago on a similar tractor. I'd test one here, but I do not have one with the issue.

That's good news and a great dealer.

Well, I hate to say it...but my new tractor is coming out of M gear also. Not as bad at the first one, but is still doing it after only 10 hrs on it. It has happened 4 times so far. The shifter just doesn't feel right. It's as if there are either 5 detents in the M area, or none at all. If I line the shifter up exactly with the M on the decal, the shifter moves toward H until is goes to N. If I put it too far forward of M, it goes toward L til it hits N. I think I've found a happy place for it, but there is no positive feeling of it going into a detent. But even that is not fool proof. I still have to keep an eye on it because it will move either forward or backward. Thankfully I don't use M gear very much.

So my plan for the future of this tractor:
1) Live with it for a while...watch if getting better or worse.
2) Not even mention it to the dealer yet. (He would kill either me or himself...maybe both)
3) Wait for Mahindra to figure out exactly what the problem is and a for-sure solution.
4) Keep up to date with other owners (here) who are having the same problem.

It is very important for us to stay in contact until a solution is found. I really like my new 2538 and I don't want to see it torn completely down chasing a ghost. This problem needs to be addressed by engineers, not mechanics. I have a 5 year warranty so I'll give them time to figure it out.

How is all this working out?

emailed mahindra service thru their web site.weeks ago still no reply.
the more i use this tractor the more i like it.runs and handles great. really like forward/reverse peddles, one of the reasons i chose this tractor.
i will check back later.

I thought you meant your dealer was going to split the tractor and fix under warranty. Why are you emailing Mahindra direct?

I think they need to remove the ability to contact Mahindra service via the website unless they are truly going to monitor and answer. If it is a worthless link, remove it. Better yet, answer emails!

If you can hold the lever in without too much force, then I agree it is just a detent issue. Surely they will be able to solve that.

How is all this working out?

So far, so good. This tractor is a thousand times better than the 1st one. I really think it had major issues. The new one is better in every way. It has a ton more power. The 1st one had NO power in M range, this one does just fine in M. Plus, I have learned where to put the shifter so it will stay in M. It still doesn't feel quite right but I've kinda learned to live with it.

Upate - Tractor has 60 hrs and has popped out of Middle Range 4 times. Discussed again with dealer. Said they were ready to fix it and new gear being made to solve problem but he didn't have part number for it yet. Said have
to split the tractor to fix it. I had arranged for dealer to do the initial 50 hr. service (about 14 hrs. late) and was within 90 days of purchase so transportation to and from would be covered if I opted to have warranty work done now.. Said the problem would be covered under warranty for full 7 years so whenever I wanted for them to fix it they would oblige, but lose the free transportation if after 90 days. I couldn't stand the thought of my new tractor being split (mechanic said would have to be split twice, I guess the back half need to be split further) and really didn't want to be the first one to have this repair so after a night of pondering decided to just get the initial service and wait a while on the warranty repair, probably till next winter. That way they will probably have been through the procedure on another tractor and maybe that will help with mine. I have lost the free transportation for the warranty work I suppose. Initial service was done last week and back home now. I asked if Mahindra going to issue a recall on the 2538 because of the problem and he said didn't think so, he thought they would fix em as the issue presented itself. Mechanic said it was drive train issue and not a wear issue so be warrantied full 7 yrs. Sure hope someone would report and review after having the repair work done on their tractor. Still love the tractor. Dealer has been up front and accommodating about the matter. I just dread the thought of splitting my new tractor though. Seems like that has potential to create more problems.
