So, my new XR4040H tractor won't start. Here is the story:

The first day it started fine. I got off while the engine was running and it cutoff. It took fifteen minutes before it started again. I worked it for about an hour.

A week later, I jumped on to work again. It started fine. I drove over to my tool shed and turned it off. When I tried to turn it on again, it won't start. The dash panel lights turn on but nothing turns over. I tried jumping it, but it still won't turn over.

I am thinking maybe it is the safety switch on the seat, but the parking brake buzzes when I am sitting on it (though I don't know if that has anything to do with it).

Any suggestions?

On the XR series HST models they can be started whether you are in the seat or not but the electronic PTO switch MUST BE OFF to start.
Parking brake will beep, not buzz, if you shut the engine off without the parking brake on. It beeps to remind you to apply the brake.
If you get off the seat while running the parking brake will beep to remind you to apply the brake.
If you apply the brake while running you can get off the seat with no beeping.
If you turn on the PTO while running, apply the brake and get off the seat the beeper will remind you that the PTO is on.
If running and you're not in the seat and manually depress the fwd or rev pedal while standing along side the tractor the engine will stall. (Safety so you don't run over yourself)
If running and moving fwd or rev and get off the seat for a better view the engine will stall.
If you start it and try to move without releasing the brake it will beep to remind you to release it.
There are a lot of safety switches to warn you.

Basically with the XR series HST if the PTO is off you turn on the key, wait for glow plug light to go off, then turn key to start. The XR HST tractor will start whether you're on the seat or not and whether the brake is on or off but not start if the PTO switch is on. I suspect your PTO switch is not turned off if it won't turn over.
I think I've mentioned all the scenarios.

If the PTO is off and you can't start it from on the seat or off it is possible one of the safety switches has disconnected or a wire came off.

I will check the fuses. Thanks for the breakdown. I thought the engine cutoff was related to sitting in the seat but I guess maybe only if the tractor is in gear.

As I think back, the last time it started, the started turned over a little slow in my opinion, so maybe the battery is too low when under load.

I do wonder if it got too wet somehow. The rain has been torrential here in East Texas.

I have a call in to the dealer (RCO) so let's see what they say.

Thanks all!

The cutoff IS related to sitting in the seat. As I mentioned, if the tractor is MOVING (not just in gear) and you lift your butt off the seat it will cut off. If tractor is not moving you can get off the seat and the Park Brake beeper will go off.

When you turn the key on and the dash lights come on does the PTO symbol stay lit. If so, work the switch a couple times by pushing down and turning.

Hmmm. The tractor cutoff on me when the tractor was stopped and I got off the seat. The tractor was in gear but the HST pedals were not depressed and the tractor was not moving and the parking brake was engaged. I don't doubt what you are saying, just explaining what happened to me.

The PTO symbol is not illuminated on the dash and the knob is definitely "off". I tried moving it back and forth as well, just to make sure.

I hope it is something simple that can be fixed quickly and easily.

Thanks!

I'm sure RCO will help you figure it out. Hope its nothing serious. Just an electrical gremlin. One last thing to check is the battery ground cable to frame.
The scenarios I mentioned are from what I have read in the owners manual and have experienced first hand.

I spoke with the dealer this morning. They think that maybe the "neutral" switch on the HST pedals may need adjustment. Stuart (from RCO) is going to come out to my place and see if he can figure it out. Thanks!

Is it possible the HST gear may be slightly in between selections? I've just noticed my tractor doing strange things with starting like you described, and this is after the brakes have been adjusted.

I'll watch this thread for sure.
