If I remember right the magnet is stationary but very close to the pedal arm. Contact with the arm is from the arm bending or slop in its linkage.

I assume that when the magnet goes on, it moves over and grabs? Kinda like a solenoid?

Yep, that is exactly what it does. If the magnet is engaged (cruise on) you can still push it down further, but it is quite stiff and hard to do. There should be about an 1/8" or so clearance with the cruise disengaged. A lot of times when the pedals don't go back when you take your foot off the pedal, it is because the magnet is dragging or misaligned.

When I was looking at the pedal linkages to see if there was a branch stuck, I recall seeing a cylindrical part perhaps two inches in diameter and maybe the same in length. Guessing that's it.
