Thanks Bernard. I reconnected the safety switch immediately, that was just a temporary troubleshooting move. The tractor is shifting just fine again after starting it with the PTO in-gear. I'm absolutely stumped why it was doing it, but it seems to be working great.
Those linkages are a son-of-a-gun to get to on my tractor. They're inboard of the fender and below the seat. I didn't even look to see how I would get to them to adjust them, but I'll do that this afternoon.
One thing that I have noticed is that both the PTO and the 4WD shifters get stiff real quickly if I don't keep them lubed. The 4WD pivot has a zerk fitting, but not the PTO pivot. I shoot some penetrating oil on those linkages whenever I think about it.
