Breaking up overburden/duff

Look into a forestry tiller - these machines can till down to 20 inches below grade and take care of the stumps, roots and all wooden debris

After clearing the brush we are left with 8-12" of overburden/duff that is mostly roots and other vegetative matter with some sand. Tilling will only get about 6" deep, so we can't get a neat grade, especially with much cutting, with the remaining layer of overburden. It just balls up and rolls up. Is there any implement that can be used on a tractor or skid steer that can work the top 12" of soil and break it up?

I did mention to you in your other thread that you would be left with this matter and you would still need to deal with it .

You really don't want to till this into the soil , not only are you loosening up all the soil and inviting erosion onto the site . You are also turning solid ground into a fibrous mess that will not pack down again . This would be the last thing you would want on a building site . Not only will it be difficult to work on , it will turn into a quagmire with a bit of moisture and traffic . The grapple rake I mentioned in the other thread will take this matter away quickly and load it into a truck .

For now we are going to keep using excavators. I think we could conserve a little more of the sand/soil using other means, but I don't think it would be enough to be significant.

Houses are back to selling prior to foundations going in, and selling houses is the ultimate goal. I really thought there may be a better way to tackle our clearing and site prep, but it appears that the way we've been doing it works as well as any.
