Bridge possibilities

Another source of less expensive materials might be military surplus. I can't remember where I last saw this, but I've seen ads for sales or disposition centers where portable bridges and other big stuff usable as a bridge can be bought. Maybe someone else in here can help with more specifics.

Heres what I did with almost the same size creek. I was considering a trailer but nothing came in the price range, looked at the railroad car thing but it was to expensive to transport. I also did not want to spend the money on new lumber for that particular project.
I was driving down the road one day next to the railroad tracks and they were replacing track and had a giant pile of used ties laying next to the track. I mentioned it to a friend and he saw some inspectors going along the track and asked what they were going to do with them and they said "givem to you" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I found about 15 in really good shape so I took those. They must weigh around 300lbs apiece, everything me and a friend could do to lift them on the trailer.
I kept it simple, dug down about 6" to 8" with the loader on both sides of the creek and set them in and filled in the exposed ends. Works like a champ /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
The longest one is 13' and shortest was 12'. Good Luck.......

Do a search for "ATV bridge" in "projects".

Then plan a TBN party.

Here is a picture of the washed out pipe. The weeds are getting overgrown and hide the creek bank. We haven't had a lot of rain lately so the flow is real low. The creek always flows but is not heavy unless we have a lot of rain. Even then I think the 42 inch pipe in the creek is not too small - just installed incorrectly.

More pictures to follow.

Here is another picture of the pipe looking downstream. The tree in the creek was left by the guy who timbered the property. As soon as I can get across the creek easily I'll grab it with the grapple and get it out of there.

This is a picture of the creek 50 feet upstream of the washed out pipe. The creek bends left and then right to where the pipe is.

Will that pipe handle the spring snow melt run off and heavy rain from the storms if it were installed properly? That is the point to ponder but with a trailer bridge you would not have to worry about entreme high water wash out. The pipe of proper size and install corectly many work very well for many years but the ther is always the chance of that one time when it doesn't.

I had a "bridge" made of 4 parellel concrete culverts, oval cross section, 19in X 30 in wide. They could hand the peak flow ok but they all washed out when debris from a gully washer plugged them . I could see that happening with the culvert you had as well.

An local excavating contractor was going to bridge this same creek on his property. He had some underground tanks he salvaged from gas stations probably. He was going to cut the ends off and use them as giant culverts. They would be big enough that plugging would be unlikely.
