My 2 cents, Check the keyway, replace ALL ignition parts. Double check magneto position. Nothing left to guess at. Good luck.

I put a new keyway in when I put it back together. I am going to take the points and condenser and magnito back to the place where I got them and get new ones. This is getting crazy. I need to finish this project.

A few things:

Is this engine in the tractor? If so, remove all ignition wiring and test just the engine. You might have wiring issues outside the engine. As stupid as it sounds - do you have the ignition switch off? I don't know what make or model tractor you are working on, and what the status of the project is.

Are the magnets on the flywheel magnetized? Could they be bad? Clean all rust off the magnets and the coil legs and regap to the proper clearance.

As for points, I'm not familiar with your engine, but are they externally mounted points, or internal under the flywheel? In any event, be sure the points are clean (use some ether) and then run a business card through the points to remove any deposits.

Ok The magnet is good on the flywheel all new ground wires rebuilt motor rebuilt carb new plug new magnito condenser points, new keyway. What the heck is the deal. If the timming is out how would I fix it without going back into the motor? Also does anyone know anyplace that restores old briggs engines I would like to have them take a look at maybe a website to look at.

i FEEL YOUR PAIN!! I had a Kohler twin 16 that gave the same symptoms and purchased a new coil for it. As I was putting in the new coil and cleaning out the straw that the mice put in there i found a stripped wire off the stator that was shorting out. Fixed that up and have been fine since...Good Luck and let us know how you make out. It's probably something simple and you're looking at the more intense things..

I don't know where you're at, but here's a place on the net that has been helpful to me before. It seems pretty basic, and you may have done everything he suggests.

Jacks Small Engines. Lawn Mower, Tractor, and Small Engine Repair and Maintenance guide.
