I know the pulley will fit but I am concerned with the size of the flywheel.

I think your miss naming something a "flywheel".

A flywheel lives 'under' the engine cover.

Edit; Never mind, I read back about the starter.

I doubt it'll fit, but ya never know.

warburtonplayer,

update your profile depending on your area some may be able to help on where to go.

I think your making a mistake with the purchace on ebay, if you have to install a fly wheel (extra)at that price you go into a store and buy a brand new one.
example--Tractor Supply has them on the shelf

Is this a ride on lawn mower?

this is for a restoration project. I am tryin to keep it as original as possible. I know norther has engines but this is a restoration. I have all the parts I could run the engine as is but I would like to put the electric start on it. Here is a picture of it minus the engine fenders seat and hood.

plan on trying to fix the original but for now the replacement will have to do., It will be identical to the original. Once I get the new one I will completley take the old apart and go through it again piece by piece.

Now you're talking. It's amazing how a project with a deadline can be a huge frustration, but when there's no deadline it becomes a fun challenge.

I think you did the right thing getting the replacement engine to get you going. Now you can take your time and do the original right.

I've had good luck so far with engines off e-bay.

Have you removed the wiring from theengine to the ignition switch? The switch shorts the engine ignition to ground to shut it off and when you turn on the switch, it opens the circuit. Sometimes I have connected to the wrong terminal when rebuilding a tractor I am not very familiar with, or don't have a schematic.

Also, make sure the points line up well with each other. The points on th s-14/s/17/4 seem to get out of alignment easily, and don't close properly sometimes. and start with a gap of .014 or a little wider. Remove and replace one component at a time to backtrack and check out the problem

Just some ideas.
