Why.. it's a quick and easy test?

Ha! Just lazy....

I should , just as course, make sure that #1 wire is indeed going to the compression stroke of #1 cylinder... I've done everything else..

Not running as smoothly as my 8N...

Just remember that rotation is opposite of your 8n.. ie.. cw vs ccw on the N.

Well, back at it again after a long work spell :D

I took her for a spin, this time with ear plugs out to listen carefully to the
engine and exhaust.

It still runs fairly rough with steady popping coming from the exhaust. Not sure if that is just the piping or something worse.

I think I'm hearing an exhaust leak from the manifold area also. Not a ticking, but more of a compressed air type of sound.... normal??

I'm not familiar with the sound of this kind of tractor, however...

Will a low compression tractor burn a valve like a car if running too
long with an exhaust manifold leak?

I'm not looking forward to pulling 50 year old exhaust manifold bolts! :D

Manifold leaks, in general, aren't good.. if it is at a mating flange, it will erode both the manifold and the mating surface eventually.

Looks like I'm pulling it off to take a look...

Sometime sit's just a bad gasket. best to catch it now if that is all it is, before any erosion or pitting starts.

I HAVE fixed -minor- pitting and -minor- erosion with permatex ultra red spread on a gasket ... usually lasts till you have to remove the manifold for some other reason. have also seen metal fileld epoxy used.. you can buy small tubes which -claim- 1500' tolerance.. these cn be spread on, filed down.. and again.. should last till you tear her down again. If the manifold is worn.. I'd just replace it..

A compression test would let me know if the valve is burnt, right?

I bet you have a couple of burned up valves. The originals cant handle unleaded gas, even with lead substitute with any load on the engine (ok for parade duty or idling around the yard but that is about it). Most old Fords have had them replaced years ago. A compression check will tell you quick.
