So, when did you quit beating your wife? Similar idea to many of the voting record analyses I've seen. The recent medicare medication thing is a good example. The new law probably sucks, but many of those voting for it didn't see anything better they could get. MANY things voted on are like that. There are very few simple up-or-down bills allowed to go to vote; there are always addenda to consider. It's much easier to say "He voted against X!!!" than to try to explain the various components of the bill which made the decision more difficult.

Boondox,

I don't know. I find myself thinking about conservatives in much the way I just decried, but then I'll meet one I really like. I am often surprised to find that people I like don't share my political views....I mean, how can they be so wrong when they're obviously such decent people? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My beloved sister, who is both more liberal in some ways than I, and also much better at presenting her ideas, has only one son. A more conservative soul has yet to be born.

All the more reason to vote for newcomers! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I'll run. My "no" means "no". My "yes" means "yes".
"Is" means "is". I never smoked or inhaled!
If there's something in a bill I don't like, I vote "no".

I still hate voting for Nadar, though. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

There's other alternatives besides Nader. I'm going to study up and figure out which one of these ones I'm going to end up voting for...

2004 Third Party Presidential Candidates

People keep telling me I'm just throwing away my vote, but I can't understand how it is considered throwing away your vote if you are voting for the person who you honestly feel is the BEST person for the job. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Where's does it say I HAVE to vote for a Democrat or a Republican?

Pete ... whoa ... now I'm really confused ... you mean his mind faded AFTER he was elected? But I thought ..... oh, never mind.

I just realized something. In all the wrangling over Oct suprise, and Iran Contra, Mr Reagan was probably the only one that didn't lie. All he could come up with was... I don't remember. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

The recent medicare medication thing is a good example. The new law probably sucks, but many of those voting for it didn't see anything better they could get.

The new Medicare law was actually defeated, fair and square. After a debate that ran into the small hours of the next morning, a vote was called at approximately 3:00 AM. It was to be a standard 15 minute vote. Before the 15 minutes were up, nearly every member of the House had voted, and it was defeated. Many Republicans joined in with the Democrats to vote "No".

The vote was kept running, however, by the majority party of the House, as they lobbied members to change their vote. After about 2 hours, the bill was still defeated. They had tried their best to get their fellow Republicans to change their votes, but only a couple switched.

So, they started working on Democrats. One by one, they found a Democrat who they could sway to change the vote. The votes changed, and the bill edged closer to defeat.

Finally, after about 3 hours, they succeeded in getting one last Democrat to change the vote to "Yes", and the bill had enough votes to pass. Immediately, the leadership ended the vote, before any of them could change their minds back again.

How do I know? Because, I sat up and watched the entire proceeding until after 6 AM in the morning. The entire thing was broadcast live on C-Span. This is fact.

The rumors started to come in the next few days. How had they succeeded in getting 6 Democrats to change their votes? Because the leaders are in a position to grant things the minority Democrats couldn't get on their own. One strong rumor, for example, was about a Florida Congressman whose son was running for a local office. According to the rumor, the House leadership promised him that the Republican opponent would quit the race, giving the son the win, if the father changed his vote.

It was the longest vote in the hostory of the House. In all their years of leadership, the Democrats never pulled such a stunt.

Bush is a lot smarter than he appears. What he is not, is articulate. Anyone who thinks he made up WMD to go into Iraq for "whatever" reason should vote for Kerry. Thats the American way. I will learn to live with Kerry as president if he wins.

It is my personal opinion that going into Iraq was the right thing to do, regardless of actual WMD ready to use. The man had the expertise make them again, and the intent to use them again, assuming he some how got rid of them (doubtful), he was waiting for the inspectors to leave and sanctions to be lifted so he could go on about his business of funding and arming terrorists and killing Americans and our allies. Do you really think WE MADE these terrorists that are currently in Iraq? Nope. They were already there, plotting and planning aginst us. At least now we can draw a bead on them in their own back yard, without waiting for them to show up here (although some still will probably).

The MAN himself was the WMD.

I can understand why some are frustrated with the difficulty we are having in Iraq, combined with not finding the WMD so far. But realistically, how could this have been any other way. This is a dirty business, fighting terrorists, and if don't realize that we are going to have a hard time defending our citizens against them.

By the way, how come we are having so much difficulty finding those stacks and stacks of RPGs that are killing Americans nearly every day?
