Broken Backhoe Subframe Repair

It looks to have been previously been welded by someone who was not really a welder.
I would ask about "your" welder's qualifications and if he has some I would let him repair it.

So the subframe ripped off the tractor housing - see pictures below. I have a welder who says he can weld it so 'it will never come apart again.' Should I trust him to weld it or should I spend the extra coin to replace the parts with new?

What are we looking at with the far right picture? Is that backhoe or tractor? If tractor, is that around the PTO area? I can't tell. Looks cast so be afraid, be very afraid! You can repair/weld cast but you have to know what you are doing ... most people just mess it up which makes it way more expensive when you take it to the pro's that have the stuff to do it.

I don't think it's been welded ... looks to me like rust migrated into the bolt holes and weakened the cast material and it let loose.

Post a picture of the whole rear of the tractor. You may be able to have a mount fabricated that attaches to other points rather than try to repair the cast material.

Yes, that is the rear of the tractor around the PTO. It is cast iron and I am afraid!

It has been repair at an earlier point by the previous owner - which is really making me question this.

Thinking about doing something like that - I'll take a look at it and post a picture later today.

I've been building my own subframe mount and it distributes the weight/forces around the PTO like yours but also where the ROPS connect to the transaxle and runs up front and ties into the FEL loader mounts. You may very well be able to do the same kind of thing as those holes in your picture in the cast material may too difficult or expensive to repair. Look up under that area too ... I have two threaded holes on the bottom of my PTO housing that aren't occupied ... you may have other mounting holes you can use. You might have to get creative but I'm sure you have other options that will work as good or better than original.

*Edit: Looked at pics again and it looks like you did have two threaded holes on the bottom but they pulled out too.

Were those 6 bolts all that held the backhoe on? I wouldn't have high hopes for repair. It was severely inadequate to start with. Even if you repair it stronger than new it will probably still break.

No, not at all. There is another bracket for the front of the subframe as well.

I wonder if it's time to sell the backhoe? You don't want to ruin your cast transaxle to be able to dig a hole.
