It all depends on how jammed in the remaining stud is. I've had some that I had to essentially hollow out with successively larger drills until I finally peeled the remaining thread out of the hole.

In your case, I think the left hand drill trick would get it. HF sells 'em pretty cheap.

Lastly, there are special (read expensive) welding rods that ill only stick to the broken bolt and not the bore. This allows you to build up the broken bolt so you can weld a nut on at the surface. This would be a absolute last resort.

The heat from welding will shrink the bolt loosining it up to where it screws right out.

G'day Mike a left handed drill is one one that drills in the other direction i.e the flutes of the drill run opposite to the norm they are very handy as you know when a drill 'bites' they can unwind the broken bolt, they are not a drill you use in your left hand

If you really need a left hand bit and no place to buy one you can make your own if you know how to sharpen a drill bit by hand. Take a regular RH bit and cut off the shank, re point the end that once was the shank. It will have a wider than normal chisel point so the web will need thinned. I've done it before and it really works, but I've also sharpened a gazillion drill bits by hand which made it a bit easier. The bit won't have a nice solid round shank for the chuck, so beware.

If anyone cares, lh drill bit got 1 bolt out no problem. The others were removed with my square extractor thing. It was really easy, not sure why I thought it was going to be so hard to do....

the welding rods in question are called extraction rods.
