Broken drawbar... chances a 'pro' welder can fix it

I had to think about it for a minute when you said "the D word", LOL. My disability is only temporary, fact is, I could probably go back to work on my real job in a couple of months. I will retire for certain next year anyways. I have just been getting a few things took care of that should of been taken care of years ago. Except for the pain of the Knee surgery, I have enjoyed my time off.. I'll milk the time off as long as I can then go back to work for a month or two and retire.

Been retired 5 years. Highly recommend it. The hours are great.

I realize I'm going WAY off topic here but ...

SIX years, for me, Richard. Did it mostly to be able to actually BE with my daughter growing up (8 years old at the time). The days FLY by now.

And SODO. You're right - good health (and family) are everything.

Okay, sermon over. Continue with your welding....

Terry

Terry, you are very Blessed to be able to retire with an 8 year old. Don't see that often.

If a person has their health they have NOTHING to complain about!!!! :)

Re that drawbar: seems to me that is a critical safety component, at least when pulling something that's on wheels. The way it shattered shows it wasn't suitable material for that application. I would have a replacement fabricated from a grade of steel that will warn of overstress by bending instead of shattering.

It "yielded". Kinda stretched, like plastic. Not shattered.

It broke. Ever drop a glass on your kitchen floor? That's shattering. Let's not forget how it broke. It had lots of force applied to it that it wouldn't normally have and that's why it broke. Pulling something as it was designed to do it would have probably never broke. It was an accident and luckily this drawbar is the only thing that was hurt.

I don't see any bending at all looking at the pictures. It's very hard, would be interesting to see a Rockwell hardness test on it.

Ok maybe 'snapped' is a better word than shattered. A critical component like that should deform if overloaded, not snap suddenly.
