Broken hydraulic arm on 410 loader

Sounds like a good 'fix' to me.

Would you offer any info on how it happened? Or is it too embarrasing?

I'm suspecting a side load from a big rock or tree dropped on the cylinder, but would think that would just bend it. If normal usage, and even though the tractor and FEL are several years old, I think Deere would stand behind it.

Beenthere - Not really sure what caused the break, other than the pin retainer had failed on the holder (the part the bucket hooks up to) and the left holder and right holder were not tilting together - as I tilted the holders down to detach from the bucket, the left one had disengaged while the right one was still under the lip on the bucket. I continued to tilt down and instead of the right side disengaging, it stuck, twisted, and subsequently snapped the cylinder rod. As far as fault - should I have stopped when I noticed the holders operating independently? Yes. Should the pin retainer have failed? No. As much as this little 4115 has done for me, I can't complain too much. But with only 155 hours which includes grass cutting (approx 1/3 of the hours), I feel the pin retainer shouldn't have failed.

As far as warranty claim - I could have taken the tractor and broken parts to the dealer (40 miles) by trailer and hoped for the best (and not be able to use the tractor by the weekend). Or, I buy a new cylinder, replace it myself, and throw my story on the mercy of the dealer and John Deere Inc. I'll provide pictures and parts in my claim and continue to use the tractor. Thanks again for the input and guidance.

Antrim Man,

The surface of the shaft is a nearly black color. they may have been nitrided, though I don't understand why since the cross section of the broken area indicates the steel is already hard...unless it was done as a wear surface /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Fish Man,
forgive me, I'm new at this tractor thing. I didn't know someone made cylinders with black rods. Learn something every day. Thanks,
Martin
