WAS CUTTING MY one field today and i always get a few killdeer birds nesting in it , here is one that i saw today, she must have been a young one as she did not have the broken wing stunt down to good, just fluttered around trying to draw me away.

When we built our house three years ago our back yard had no sod, grass or anything but was just dirt. A killdeer built a nest on the ground right out in the open. We would walk down by the nest and everytime the killdeer would try to steer us away. It wasn't long and she figured out we wasn't going to do anything and just would walk away from the nest and not do t he broken wing thing. We never did get to close to the nest though, just close enough to see the eggs a few times.

Last year, I rototilled around two nests, this year only one, the main problem when tilling is that your know it is there and where it was but you cannot see the thing until you are almost on top of it when you go around again. I sure get a kick out of how they try and play you to get you away from the nest. Enjoy them.

Several years ago there was a Kikdeer nest on a part of the farm I'd wanted to till. I was able to come pretty close but never did find the nest. Waited till four young were visible and running in the field and then tilled the area.

I just had a killdeer nest at the edge of my gravel drive way. There is a lot of traffic with people coming in and out, most who don't know it is there. When I mowed, I got the broken wing trick, and that is how I was able to find the nest. Those eggs in gravel cannot be seen without really straining. She got them hatched, and now they are gone.

Frank, I had the same thing happen, in two places, one year when I was mowing my pasture. I spotted one of the nests and went around it. I never did find the other nest, so I don't know whether it survived or whether I destroyed it.

They often nest on the back side of my yard. When I see one doing the broken wing trick, I move away and watch until she goes back to sit on the nest. Then I go put a small flag about a foot from the nest so that I don't accidentally mow over it.

"I just had a killdeer nest at the edge of my gravel drive way"

Mine was smack dab in the middle of my gravel driveway.. I blocked the road w/ a sign.. let everyone drive on the grass to go around.

The little ones are funny.. for hidding they dive head first into the grass.

Frank,
Those are nice pix.

Like the rest of you, I get a few nesting killdeers each year. Boy they love to nest in a gravel driveway. From the pic that Frank shared it's easy to see why.
