Nice cutter! Well worth the price you paid even without the disc

Piston,
Old thread I know but do you still have this cutter? I am considering a used Brown 460 to replace my current (beat to heck) medium-duty 6' Woods cutter. (I actually want to downsize to a 5 foot cutter for increased maneuverability in the woods.)

How has the tail wheel assembly held up during use in the woods? I do a lot of backing up in and around rocks and bigger trees. My current cutter has one solid bar going out to the tail wheel. The Brown appears to have well supported angle iron in an A-frame configuration.

Light-duty Cutters often have strapping that goes out to the tailwheel that I know for sure I would mangle all to heck with the work (abuse) I do. I just want to make sure the brown configuration is sturdy enough as probably 50% of the shreading I do is in reverse.

Any other week points with this series of brush hog you have found?

Thanks
Luke

Luke
Not sure if you’ve made the decision yet or not, but to answer your questions specifically regarding the tailwheel, it has held up admirably well. I still beat this cutter to death and haven’t had any issues with the tail wheel framing or assembly.

The only things I’ve managed to bend and break is the steel skirt in the back (I also do the majority of cutting in reverse, cutting small trees rather than grass) I’ve bent the skirt back to the point where the blade hit the bent in steel. I wrapped a chain around a tree, hooked it to the skirt, drove forward and bent it back and went back to work.

I also broke a blade in half and replaced
The blades with new. Other than that, it’s proved extremely tough and durable.

My tail wheel has held up well along with the rest of my 472. Brown makes a very durable cutter and very conservative in their rating.

I just purchased a Titan 10' cutter for my soon to be delivered New Holland t4.75. It is rated for 3" material and weighs 1500# compared to my Brown that specs out at close to 1100# at 6'. The Brown is rated for 2" material. Looking closer at the specs both units utilize 7 gauge metal on the top but the Brown has a 1/4" thick rear wall. Both have 120 HP gear boxes while the Titan utilizes 100 HP on the side boxes. I did find it interesting that the Titan uses a 5/8" thick stump jumper while the Brown uses only 7 gauge. I guess Titan makes the stump jumper heavier and thus the higher rating? Any cutter with 100 plus HP gearboxes and 7 gauge sheet metal is heavy duty enough for me.

Nice cutter. It will take a lot of abuse.

5" pine and 4” birch are about max size with my tractor. :D

Luke, good purchase! I almost bought that mower when I saw it posted only because it was such a good price for a barely used mower. I couldn’t convince myself that I needed a second Brown though.

That thing will last you a lifetime, even here in our rough and rocky landscapes! With the hydraulic toplink, I’ve found I can raise the rear end up pretty high on larger trees, back into them, then lower the mower down slowly and mulch up an occasional 7” pine.

Thanks! I paid $1200 after negotiating and it was basically brand new.

Yes, the "max daimeter of destruction" is greatly increased with a hydraulic top link! :D
