Linux? "Oh the pain." (Said like Dr. What's His Name from Lost In Space). I remembered. His name was Dr. Smith.

Wingate offers many of the services of Win2K Server at a reasonable cost.

I will know tomorrow when I visit the office where these PCs are located (the church I attend). I volunteered to handle replacing all the ancient PCs and everything else is working fine. Since Internet access from their desks was an improvement, there was no rush to resolve this problem.

Is Mike using Wingate or internet connection sharing?

I tried to convince them to get DSL/cable but was not successful. If I had been, I would have installed a DSL/Cable router, used the embedded DHCP, auto logon, etc. and been done with it and Wingate could have been eliminated. Plus there would have been no need to always have the server powered on to access the Internet. I know there are routers that you can attached modems too, but there was no way I was going to introduce the added complication of a router to their environment just to stay at modem speeds.

Mike,

Give them time... they may see the merit of having a high speed connection. Dial-up service for multiple users! Okay. We have very big pipes (100 mbps to the desktop - giga between floors and buildings - OC xx into facility) at work. I go home to my 56kbps modem (usually only get 26.4kbps - awful!!).

If they want to stick with dial up, you might want to try a modem/router. It is a modem with a built in router. I just purchased one this week. Have not set it up yet, but have set others like it up before. Here's a link to a refurbished one that was regularly $350.00, now $40.00. 56K Internet Gateway Router . It provides DHCP, NAT, Dial on Demand and alot of other features. This is just one brand. You don't see too many of them, since everyone is pushing DSL and Cable. Hope this helps.

If that link doesn't work, here's the straight url.

I set up the 56K modem router tonight. It works great. I plugged it into the phoneline and plugged it into an uplink port on my 10/100 switch. I was able to telnet into it from any PC in the house and configure it. Had it done in about a half an hour. Rebooted it. Set all of my PCs to DHCP, except my server, and rebooted them. As soon as I open internet explorer, the modem dials out and connects to my ISP.

All of the PCs seem to load pages much faster now as compared to when I was using Internet Connection sharing as well.

Hope this helps.
