By sheer coincidence, I found a marvelous way to clear brush from quite large patches - all at once. This story begins in Alaska - on one of our Top 'O the World 4WD outings. We were way out in the tundra and came upon a long stretch of water soaked ground(tundra). Of course, the brave & bold spewed forth - "NO PROBLEMS" - and with screaming V-8's they took off across this forbidden land. They got about 75 feet out and were up to the top of their fender wells in the "soup". And as usual - this was their first mistake.

With nobody having a twin-forked boat anchor( mistake #2 - for the group) and no tree within 100 miles(place that one with God) - the brave & bold pulled out their 150 feet of 5/16" winch line and circled the brush - to the left side. The winch line was brought back and hooked over itself to form a great lasso. The great whining sounds - even greater expectations - the end result was the total removal & very tight bunching of about a 60 foot circle of brush on the left side of the vehicle.

After all was "winched in" - mud & slime wiped off the cable - it was totally obvious that all we had done was create a focal point for the Environmentally friendly folks & Friends of the Earth.

With all bravado in their pockets & being totally crestfallen the brave & bold accepted the winch line from a members vehicle and were unceremoniously winched out backwards.

However - it did demonstrate how truly effective a winch and looped cable can be at brush removal & gathering.
