Would I be able to RUN A Bush Hog 2610 with a 1963 John Deere 4010 diesel?

The mower says 1000 PTO. Is that something to stay away from? I'm not familiar with that/ Just 540.

if it is a 1000 rpm mower, you need a tractor that does 1000 rpm on the pto. generally 1000 rpm pto's are small/old and asian or large like arounf the 100+ hp range. There are exceptions in the domestic antique market as well.

I was thinking the 1963 John Deere 4010 had something where you could easily change the 540 to a different RPM. I'm not sure what that RPM was or if I even have a clue what I am thinking of. According to this you can swap from 540 to 1000 - If I am getting that right. Next I will have to search how to do that.

With the 1000 PTO, would this tractor have enough hp to run the 10' batwing?

10' should be no problem at all for a 80hp 4010

What RPM the pto is dont matter in terms of HP

Are there any huge disadvantages to running a 1000 RPM Mower?

I can imagine that 1000 RPM might be harder on things than a 540.

The spare PTO shaft that came with the tractor - that I assume is for the 1000 RPM swap - looks like it might need to be cleaned up a bit. It looks like it's been sitting in the tool box for 40 years or so

Parts might be harder to find and PTO shaft balance will be more important, it will lock you into finding a 1000 RPM capable tractor if you need to replace your tractor down the road.
Otherwise, it should work fine.

The blades will only be turning at 54% of their designed speed.
It will be like running a 540 rpm mower at 291 rpm.
Will it still cut? Depends on what your cutting and how fast you're going.

I believe (someone check my math) if you drive at 54% of your normal speed, the torque required will be equal to a 540 rpm mower, but you'll only need 54% of the horsepower.
and if you drive at normal speed, the horsepower required will be equal to a 540 rpm mower, but you'll need (1/.54=) 185% more torque (assuming the blades are going fast enough to cut).

When I bought my JD the dealer said you want the bush hog = to or a little less than tractor width. That way you can cut along a fence line easily. I wanted all the hp I could get for the size, rather too much than too little.

Your 4010 will handle a 10 footer well. I run one with 65 PTO HP and you have more HP at 80 or so. Since your Deere has 540/1000 PTO available looks like a good fit to me. I typically run 5.8 MPH according to my dash panel. That is 2nd range in 4th gear. I could run it in 3rd range and 1st gear but it is too fast to my liking.

Thanks. I am going to an auction tomorrow. Have to see what that mower sells for.

Itr is a one wing mower. I still do not know if you could just run the 5" section without some major disassembly. 10' would be good for the road ditches and CRP.
