I was looking at the 18 series and under specifications it states that both 60 and 72 inch cutters can be used with 20 to 65 HP PTO tractors. Does this have to do with the HP rating of the cutter gear box hp rating?
I couldn't find the gearbox HP on the land pride 18 series but assume its 65hp,the woods medium duty has a 120 hp gearbox. If this is true I would like to find a cutter with a 65 to 90 hp rated gearbox that weighs as much as the woods BB600 in 60in.

I believe the 18 series is a lighter/medium duty 2" cut the land pride 26 /27 series is a 3" cut rated medium duty cutter I almost bought a 2784 but went with the bush hog bh27 instead

The cutter's you would be looking for are the Landpride RCF2660/2760, the Brown 215, the Bush Hog BH25, and of course the Woods BB600 you mentioned. I'm sure Rhino, Kodiak, and other's make similar weights as well but I'm not familiar with them. I had a Woods BB60 and it didn't take long to mangle it into funny shapes. The Brown 472 I replaced it with is taking a beating quite happily.

Are you concerned that the hp rating of the BB600 at 120hp is too high, or just looking for the equivalent in LP?

I'm trying to understand why one manufacturer states one given PTO hp as a minimum and another lists something completely different for the same size cutter. The only difference I can see is the overall weight and gearbox hp from one to another. The overall weight is not a concern for my new tractor but my 31hp PTO would be the only factor.
Am I right to assume it takes more PTO hp to wind up and turn a gearbox rated for 120hp compared to one rated for 90?

It makes no practical difference in power required to spool up the higher rated gearbox.

The only thing that you'd notice with the lighter duty cutter vs heavier one, is that it would take a bit more power to spool up the medium duty cutter, or at least that is what I have experienced.

It's not enough of a difference to really matter much though. The benefits of a true medium duty cutter FAR outweigh any disadvantages (if there even are any.)
