Brush hog guard height?

We have an older Howse 500 brush hog with the guard chain missing from the front (the end facing the back of the tractor). We are going to replace it with the heavy black material with woven steel that newer models have.

Assuming that the brush hog is sitting flat on a level surface how much space should we leave at the bottom between the guard and the ground?

That seems to vary from looking at the new mowers on the front yard. A possible problem when we take them in many are removed! This may come from obstructions bending them back or breaking retainers or from the fact that in tall grasses they don't have the ability to stand back up to be cut with the front panel being to tall.

It looks like most are about two inches shorter then the deck sides normally.
