Just got an old brush hog. Unscrewed a square bolt to check for oil and didn't see any. Not sure how much oil to add and what type of oil? It is a Ford 951 5' brush hog. Looks like there is a small hole below and to the right of the bolt where oil has come out of in the past...is that the fill line?

Yes.
Put gear oil (85/90 or 85/140 or similar) into the top hole till it comes out the bottom/fill line hole.
When it starts to come out the fill line hole the gearbox is full.
Try not to overfill by to much or you run the chance of pushing a seal out when the gearbox gets hot..

Good advice from Dk.

I'll add that the top plug is often not just a plain plug, but has a venting mechanism. This allows pressure to escape without blowing the seals.

Yep.. But I've seen cheap ones that used a simple fixed plug.. and I've also seen a vent cap plug up.. so try not to count on it.. or at least service the vent cap in a can of mineran spirits to clean it, when you do your annual tractor maintenance..

How do you drain old oil out of the thing? Soundguy you have a 951, correct?

I have a question also on this line - I hope it does not change for your question. I have a extra Trans/hydro fluid left from when i changed my fluids last month. Can i put that in there or should i stick to Lube oil? as i just do not want to store the 1/8 fill 5 gal bucket of Hydro. fluid.

Hydraulic fluid is a very thin oil compared to gear oil, so personally, I would not consider using it in a brush hog gear box.

I just really doubt that, but we've maybe had a little different life experiences and knowledge in different areas. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
