Ok. It IS the cats meow of PHD. But how much is that kitty in the window

Call them if you really want to know, it isn't cheap. But then again, when is the best ever cheap? The link was to an outstanding product (IMO). Unless you own a big ranch, or do this commercially, it probably isn't even in the ballpark for the average DIY/homeowner. However, their augers can be purchased for the average PHD (what they call "pendulum"), and that is something to consider for hard material drilling. Maybe I am getting off the mark here, but it is like adding a toothbar to a fel, you will see a great deal of difference when digging.

Altex,
your Bush Hog dealer can give you a price on the downforce kit. To get a competitive price, the Bush Hog web site has a dealer locator by state.

I know a cheaper, hillbilly-engineered way. :D

When it stops digging and starts to get that polished-dirt and my auger just doesn't seem to want to go any deeper, I stop, grab my hose and fill the hole with water.

Then I come back the next day, the water is all gone and the hole digs like a hot knife in butter.

If you aren't in a hurry, try it. It will save you a lot of money and I think it's actually easier on my tractor as it digs so fast that next day.

Some of us don't have a hose long enough. There are places on my property that the hose would have to be well over a thousand feet long. And most of the time I can't get back to it until the next week. There are many situations where the old tried and true ways just don't work out for everybody. ;)

One thing I did that may help: I took 3 chunks of 2x6 and made a cradle that holds 4 milk crates. Fill the crates up with stones.

Another thing I've found: Clay with the right moisture isn't too bad. Dry clay is too much like brick. I've drilled to clay, fill the hole with water and come back the next day.

If I were going to do it again, I'd get an auger that mounts on my tractor bucket.
