Brush/Weed Trimmers?

I have never had the string head on my Stihl,I use the 3 pointed brush blade on about everything,I am on my second blade after about 7 years use,I have sharpened my blade on occasion.I have cut through 2" to 3" saplings,I like Honda products, but I would imagine Stihl is in a whole different league when it comes to brush equipment etc. Just my thoughts.

Just bought a Tanaka line trimmer model # 2510. 1.3hp 24cc
An excellent well balanced sure starting unit with all the cutting power I'll ever need. Also bought a cultivator attachment. New emission regulations are phasing out the existing line so there are great deals available on "leftovers". Lawnstaion.com were excellent to deal with. Check out their web site they must have 50 types of trimmers listed with prices. I am very impressed with Tanaka products not only this trimmer but also their high end chain saw I purchased last March.

I have a Stihl FS-85 with bike handlebars and I really like it. Just this weekend I trimmed up my parents 5 acre parcel that had been neglected all year. Used 1.5 tanks of gas and was inside in time for breakfast.

I have used the nylon string, 3 prong brush blade, and the saw blade with very satisfactory results. Using the appropriate attachment, grass on up to 3" diameter saplings are toast. I generally use the nylon string for most things, and the bump-advance feature has always worked flawlessly.

I am curious about the comment above to the effect that Stihl isn't making their own engines. Can anyone shed some light on this?

This is the way Gravely used to deal with brush. Note the attention to safety in design /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif. You don't have to ask whether you can still find something like this on the show room floor.

That is a pretty serious looking weed trimmer(to say the least)I never seen a Gravely with one of those.I would say it could wade through about anything.Gravely tractors are tough.A lot of people had those when I was a boy.

Isn't that what the Gremans used in WW-II?

NASTY LOOKING!!!

I think I will buy the Stihl FS250?
Any reason why I should not buy the FS250 versus the FS85?

I look forward to responses.

Thank you.

I was looking at larger brushcutters than what I got, and the salesman told me that for my needs, It would be overkill. After using it for two years, I think he was right. My 10 acres is covered with brush, weeds, etc., and I have used it a lot. As long as the saw blades are sharp, I can take down pretty much any tree less than 3" diameter in one swipe. Anything bigger than that, and you want to fell it with a saw anyway. No annual on the planet can stop the 3-bladed grass blade, but I have lacked enough horsepower to drive the nylon line at max speed in extremely thick stuff.

Only you know your needs. I tend to buy more than I think I need (bigger, badder, nastier) and the FS-85 fits my profile. You might use the money you save on at least one extra saw blade, so that you always have a sharp one on the machine.

fishman

Last year when I bought my Stihl FS-85R (shaft separates to allow use of other gear drive accessories or to make transportation easier), I was told that some of the models (CARB compliant, I believe), are made with Ryobi engines and these are not as long-lived as the Stihl engines.
