I know it's been posted but "search" didn't help me find the info:

What are the bolt sizes that hold the blades onto a 422 brushhog? I finally had one snap off, and it also took the "bump stop" bolt at the same time.

I'd like to pick up and replace all four, and include the extra nut and length for the bumpstops.

Anybody remember the sizes?

Have you guys thought about welding a 1/2 in thick by 1 in piece of steel if front of the bolt to take the impact. I understand that this is a spare hole set, and if needed later, the metal could be ground off, and the blades shifted around to the unused holes,

Would a Grade 8 bolt and nuts work just as well in the one for the stop -- that'd certainly be easier for those of us without hot wrenches....

I'd imagine that the blade mounting bolts are Grade 5 (or are they Grade 2 ???), to allow them to shear, but the stop isn't intended to shear....

If the Grade 8 bolt is harder than the hub, and you keep banging that blade against the blade stop, it will just make that hole out of round, and when you have to use it to mount the blades, you will probably have some vibration. `I have a similar problem on my Dixie Chopper. If the blade get out of balance, the outside ring of the steel bearings will start to beat or pound the hub until it is no longer round, and then you have to change out the hub. The bearings may be OK, it is just the unbalance from only part of the blade assembly. One part has to give, you only hope that it is the least expensive, and it could be if you catch it early.

Hadn't thought about that, J.J.

Of course, I'll buy a few extra bolts to have for spares, so I wouldn't be grinding off any modifications made to the bolt-stop.

From what I could see, they are Grade 5 bolts.

I'll stick with that grade for the reason given by JJ above.

Now.... what are the sizes?

My bag that the bolts come in says 5/8 inch, 11 threads per inch, 2 inches long (5/8-11 X2)
I expect this is correct, but there are no guarantees.

Thanks, Bob.

The hardware store is on the route home from work. I'll pick up a some of those and see if they are the correct size. If not, no big deal. I was trying to have the bolts ready when I hoist the mower to the vertical, break out the air hoses and impact gun, and fire up the compressor.
