Great looking job!!

Yea, try working under Cal Osha. Yep, hooks are a no, no. They do not want you using any thing for crane work but a crane. They will not get any argument from me. I have seen plenty of shoddy rigging by contractors on our site and had to call a halt to the work until they had it right. Forklifts and manlifts used as cranes, an accident looking to happen. Now the underground piping industry in my area is still using their backhoes to drop pipe in a ditch with bucket hooks. Guess it just hasn’t caught up with them yet. I have completed the upper hooks on my FEL and will just have to hope Osha doesn’t catch me out in my back lot! I have attached pictures before painting. Sure love that little Lincoln Mig.

now dont take this the wrong way, not trying to be argumentive just throwing some thoughts out there. first of you talk about lowering pipe with an excavator rather than a crane, i dont know about all backhoes but i know my gradall excavator has instructions in the manual on using it for craning a load, it shows where to hook it properly and has a load rating chart also. so i dont see whats wrong with lifting a load with it, like i said maybe other excavators have different reasons. now weather the load were lifted on a crane or excavator i would never get under it or alow anyone under it or in the danger area that just safe practice regardless. now also i dont see what is wrong with using a forklift to lift a load as long as its properly setup, ie a jib boob or bridge between the two forks that is properly secured. after all a forklift is designed to lift a load what difference does it make if its on the forks or below them,i do agree tho that just slipping the chain over the fork as many do is very dangerous.

First, thanks all for the compliments on my welding. It's just lots of practice, and learning to read the puddle.

Yep, forklift with an engineered jib with load chart attached, no problem. Fork lift with c-clamp holding chain in place on forks, problem. Backhoe with non-engineered hook, welded to top of backhoe bucket, problem. I have yet to see a load chart for a standard backhoe/FEL so it can be used like a crane to lower a load below grade. But I have seen, that same backhoe in the ditch with what was once it's load. Not good. Big old excavator would probably have had no problem.

Great job with the bucket hooks. With the rated capacity of your machine they will never become a problem. Common sense goes along way determining the correct usage in this situation. I think the boys will agree, now its time for a treat and a nap in the sun.

Even my little Deere backhoe (model 47) on the back of my JD4200 has instruction in the manual for that. It shows where and how to attach the chain, etc. I don't remember if it had a load rating chart or not. That backhoe is a wonderful tool for loading and offloading with a 48" trailer bed height.

Beautifiul work Sandlot. My hooks are located in the same spot and aren't near as pretty as yours. I can tell you my 5/16 hooks are still in place after trying to hoist a stump big enough to get the rear tires light (with backhoe) and then my FEL hydraulic line blew.

Your welding job looks professional.
Looks like you bought it that way.

Did you use stick or mig?

Haw Shucks guys, aint nothing. I really appreciate the compliments. I used a Lincoln Weld-Pak 100 mig. It is just a small 110v unit, but welds big! I really like it. And as you guys have pointed out, makes me look good! ;)

Great job! :) Mind if I show your work to my local welder? That's exactly the reinforcement and welding approach I want him to take.

May I ask where you got the nifty flat hooks? Everyone around here seems to have been forced to use a modified clevis-type hook. Your installation looks far more professional and OEM.
