Jim:

The centering spring and detent system should be under a cup shaped cover on the end of the valve body opposite the end of the spool that connects to the actuating lever.

Best to remove the valve and work on a table (in the kitchen in your wife permits). The spring/detent system often shoots out little parts when you take the cover off. Remove the spools (mark which one goes where), clean the valve body, and check out the centering springs. One may be broken or just weak.

Thanks again Farmerford.. As soon as I can, I will take it apart. Unfortunately, it will not be on the kitchen table :)

Well.. I didnt take the valve apart yet.. but... After using it a few hours and a neighbor moving peat moss and top soil for 5+, the bucket tilt no longer makes the arm raise when at full back tilt and the arms fall very, very slowly now.. So, I'm thinking simply dirty/sticky valves that are now clearing up. Cool

Question: if I was to change the fluid and filter, would regular UTF work?

No, not if the pump was designed to work with motor oil.

Have you did a pressure check.

Have you cleaned all hyd filters?

You could have multiple troubles, such as worn pump, worn valve , bad piston seals in the cyl, etc.

Type of fluid is least of your worries.

Just about any mineral based fluid will work.
