The centering spring and detent system should be under a cup shaped cover on the end of the valve body opposite the end of the spool that connects to the actuating lever.
Best to remove the valve and work on a table (in the kitchen in your wife permits). The spring/detent system often shoots out little parts when you take the cover off. Remove the spools (mark which one goes where), clean the valve body, and check out the centering springs. One may be broken or just weak.
