Thanks for the advice; I will give them a call. I'm not quite ready to buy just yet, want to get my ducks in a row first. The attachment plate looks to be 2/8's of an inch, not that thick. I am guessing it would need to be reinforced with some kind of plating at the base? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Unfortunately, I do not have any welding equipment, and haven't done any welding since high school. I would have a local welder do the work. A welder is on my wish list for later on. If nothing else just to make a few simple attachments. For now, I just want a working mini hoe for some of the more aggressive projects around my house.

I am wasting a lot of time trying to find free backhoe plans, and I see you have had some success. Could you supply me one or two links you thought were good?

I have recently purchased 100+ acres of NC clearcut land, and there is a lot of work I need to do on the property, to include some ditching. I have to tell you this is an investment but it has eaten up all my financial resources...to hire out the work will be VERY expensive.

There is a link on that page to the portable backhoe. The plan is in two parts in PDF format. Save them to your hard drive. If you do a google search for Vintage Farm Plans and/or portable backhoe, you get lots of dead-end links. Tim:

I bought in Cumberland County, just outside Fayetteville, NC. I retired out of Fort Bragg and stayed in the area. NC gives a tax incentive to anyone who "tree farms", basically grows pine trees in the state, and it appears to be a lucrative thing to do to help avoid some of my state and federal taxes.

Thanks a million. I had chased that link down before and as you said it was a dead end, at least the version I found. THe one you sent me worked, and I have taken your advice and saved the files to the hard drive.

I shall be scrounging parts and will try and keep this forum posted on any progress.

David, Now that I have every thing welded together, and tested the cylinders, I have found some problem areas. These problems were only apparently in the testing phase. One being that if using larger cylinders, to allow more clearance for the larger cylinder. The other one is on another cylinder shaft touching the 4x6 in the extended position in the roll over position. I have to modify the mounting holes for the boom, and one cylinder bracket. Smaller diameter cylinders probably would have worked, but I used what I had. My advice would be to tack every thing together, fit the cylinders in place, and rotate evrything through several cycles. I used the aux hydraulic lines to operate the cylinders. It makes a good test valve. After everything is built and tested, I will plug into the PTO circuit and use inline adjustable flow control valves to control speed.

Started welding tonight. I wanted to wait until I had all the pieces cut before starting to weld, but realized that would be impossible, since I am not strictly following the plans. I needed to weld the first piece on the frame so that I can measure, cut, drill and weld the two brackets that will hold the top and bottom of the boom pivot assembly.

So, here's a couple pictures of the first two pieces going together.

1st one is a side view of the main frame tipped on its side. It is 48" long. The piece I welded on is about 6" long.
