I have a cheap little Earthway. too small. Can't afford a new two row, and i'm in an area where there just aren't any used tractor implements.

I figure seen most of the old ones have been jsut about completely rebuilt by their owners, anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thinking about building a two row planter. I know gears are a concern, but i'n thinking a couple of stacked pulleys from a drill press and a belt could be used. Maybe buy seed plates, or figure out what works.
Use it primarily for corn, beans, peas, sunflowers...

Anyone done it, seen it tried, or accomplished?

Thanks,

Larry

Sounds like way too much fineese work to get the seeds to drop right for me.

But here in my part of Minnesota, you can buy planters pretty cheap. I got a planter with 13 IHC 295 units for $250. I guess I could build 6 2-row units out of it with just a little square tube & make some money! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif From what I hear planters sell for in other parts of the country.

2-row units are rare, but cheap, here.

Could you check salvage yards for a couple of planter units to start with, and build from there? IHC, Allis Chalmers, JD, and others all made self-contained row units, all you would need is to make the 3-point frame. Would be a lot more accurate I'd think.

Man, you paid what we would expect to pay for a 2 row, for your 13.
Closest implement salvage yards to me are about 200 miles. I'm in the edge of the desert, no real farming here.

I have what i think are 2 IH fertilizer hoppers. IH 3570-AA. Someone got off with the rest of the parts. The mechaical parts of them are cast.

I don't have a prob with buiding the tool bar and 3 pt.

What would you consider the tricky bits of the operation?

Thanks,
Larry
