:D yeah how's that go again, beer before wine you'll be fine, wine before liquor will make ya sicker, hmm something like that :D

oh yeah what's that big brick thing in the background, some sort of smoker?

Mornin BP,
Sorry for the delayed response :) I think Ive been workin on my tractor or something :)

The big brick thing in the backround is a feeble attempt at masonry by me :) It is a barbeque cooker grill. I made stainless grates at work that can be set at different levels along with the charcoal or wood, which ever Im cooking with :D I will try and get some closeup shots in the next few days!

Toolmakers are brave enough to try and tackle anything, unfortunately that doesnt always mean that its always done well

Well that settles it. After reading this thread....I've got a pile of field stone I dug up a few weeks ago that's going to build a fire pit. I like the cooking/chimney idea, as well. I had a little fire ring going last year, but it turned into a mudhole pretty quick. I'll have to do the rock on the bottom like you guys suggest. Great thread...

Ratter,
If you've got a pile of field stone and you're going to go to the lengths of building a chimney and stuff, then you might want to go to the added creativity of making one of those firebox/chimneys with a pizza oven built in. Everyone seems to be doing these wood fired pizza ovens now. A little searching on the net will probably give you some ideas and dimensions that would work.

It'd be pretty relaxing to throw a few ingredients onto a pre-made pizza crust and sit around the fire with a "sundowner" in hand as it cooks.

Thanks Scott, if you can get some pics of it that would be great, I've got big plans for an outdoor "kitchen" in the future :D

Hi BP,
I will get some shots this weekend along with the stainless grates. What I would really like to do is one of those outside pizza ovens, just dont know how much I would use it  :)

This is the fires that we like in WV. BTW, the fire marshal hasn't been hired yet.

Mornin BP,
Here are a couple pics at my attempt at masonry :) As you can see, I have outcropped the brick at three levels. This way I can adjust the grates to cook over a wood fire or use the bottom position and use charcoal and adjust the top grate accordingly. The stainless rod was donated from work :) I think we ordered to much for some particular job

Timber, please forgive me for deviating from the original thread on firepits, since I dont consider this thing a firepit, but it does have fire in it :)

That may also be refered to as the "Extended Benefits Plan" or depending on view point " With Just Cause"
