Building a backyard Fire Pit

It's my rural property. I have a campground set up there for when we visit on weekends. It will be at least 2 years before we can move up there so in the meantime, I made a comfortable camp to enjoy. Here's a pic of the front of it.



And this is the tree house and playground for my young son, my grand kids and their buddies. It's right next to the camp.

Holy smokes, a campground??? This is a campground? It looks like a small city or something the Swiss Family Robinson would have built. I almost expect to see some coconut powered elevator to the tree house. Impressive.

I'll add the tents give it a bohemian flair or maybe medieval festival or something.

So many nice places to gather, here is ours, it is nearly finished, we still have a few rocks to add and upper area had to be planted and mulched. notice the bird bath in right side of pic. we have a strange bird enjoying a cool drink..Also , lots of help from a red friend moving rocks, couldn't have done it without it. John

That came out good...easy too once you get the hang of it, huh?
I have an image resizer down loaded off the net with 3 sizes to schoose from. Now when I right mouse click on an image, it pops up as one of the selections. I usually use small 640 x 480 but also medium 800 x 600 screen ... even large when there is detail in the photo I want to reveal.
because large is still way less than the original. The image reziser is super easy to use. Just click the size you want and another image will pop up next to the original photo with the same name except is says "small" or "medium" next to it. If the pictures are for TBN and uploading to Photobucket, I delete the original to save space on my hard drive, keeping only the resized one. So all my albums combined (almost) take the space of like one 2meg picture. If you don't have one, look online for the Windows one that will show up when you right mouse click on the picture you want to resize.

Hey Rob, I modified my Firepit. I liked that idea putting stone in the bottom so the water doesn’t turn the ash and dirt to mud. I put in some large to small stone arranged in the bottom. I also wanted to bring up the depth too it was a little deep and when it burned down you didn't get the real benefit from the coal bed.





It was quite a show with exploding stones blasting out of the pit LOL my neighbor is a city boy relocated into the country 2 months ago. I had to tell him to stop being such a baby. I said it will stop after all the water evaporates. I'll make a country boy out of him yet LOL

One other benefit from the rock bottom is that it allows some air circulation down there and it seems that the woods burns better and completely down to ashes, instead of leaving a ½ burned log.

Well that settles it. After reading this thread....I've got a pile of field stone I dug up a few weeks ago that's going to build a fire pit. I like the cooking/chimney idea, as well. I had a little fire ring going last year, but it turned into a mudhole pretty quick. I'll have to do the rock on the bottom like you guys suggest. Great thread...

Well even in suburbia there are those of us brave enough to burn campfires. It is just like camping except you get your own cozy bed at night, lots of late nights in front of this pit.

The big herkin granite boulders were placed during my first tractoring experience many years ago on a Kubota (yikes) that I borrowed from the owner of the company I worked for at the time. Don't break it!!

The granite works very well to reflect sound, light, and also keep the wind from blowing smoke where you don't want it.The other rocks are basalt from a local quarry. I have 10s of thousands of lbs of half man basalt rocks made into walls here. The small ble box is built over a pallet and holds several fires worth of dry firewood.
