My wife is frugal but she knows I would never put up with a waste like that.

I know from personal experience, as my wife was also married before, that sometimes previous emotional abuse leads to thing that we new (supportive, non-abusive) husbands tolerate. My wide does many things I shake my head about, but smile and do it any way.

I cannot answer for tradosaurus, but I can answer for me.
15 normal years, then 8 separate affairs over 13 years, hiding them all, and lying the whole time.
The divorce was a long time ago, but I most certainly do not "still wonder why"!
