Hi
I been wondering for a long time how possible it would be to build my own hay rake. Looking at it I have 2 four wheel Hay rakes. Guess I could easily make up an axle and could purchase the hydraulics. The one question I have in my mind about doing this is how easy is it to flip te wheels on what would be the right hand side of the rake so make them rake as they should.
Anyone who has either tried or thought about this, your thoughts, help and opinions are much appreciated

are you talking double wings? or a single wing of the v-rake?

not sure what wheels you are talking about? are you talking "tires" or the "hay tine wheels"?

for the outside edge tires = large size caster wheels. but instead of little plastic things. they were up sized for a regular implement tire.

the inside / middle tires. (one on each side) and straddles the windrow in the center. can be a bit different... are these what you are talking about?

never ran a V rake before. let alone watch one. looked up a few on youtube. i came across a couple video's of complaints about the U shape frame that holds 2 of the tine wheels together. they were stating in heavier hay, the hay would all build up and clog up on the U. looking at some pictures. i started noticing "old v rakes" to newer V rakes. and more new V rakes (more expensive ones) each tine wheel had its own frame going to it.

========
i was scratching my head some to different styles of V rakes....

some had tine wheels "on the back side" so basically tires ran over the hay first, then the tines wheels would grab it all and move it into a wind row. ((would not matter tractor tires already run over the cut down hay to begin width))
--picture you are showing

the other V rake style. the tines were on the front side. so the tine wheels would grab it all and toss into a windrow in center. and THEN the tires would go over everything. i had a little issue on some of them ((the very center wheels)) almost seemed like they might flatten the outer edges of a windrow maybe?

you wanting to flip tires themselves to tine wheels....*scratches head* makes no sense to me. in how they are suppose to be.

==========
some complaints about being able to control each wing of the V rake independently... (more hyd hoses / valves needed/wanted) more to do with rolling a windrow and grabbing another windrow you did not want to grab.

above is first V rake style setup. that had a combo of everything. and more likely fully adjustment of each wing and angle of it.

Profarm , moring... You have to remove the pressed steel wheel in the center of the tines.... transfer it to the other side of the tines.... line up all the tines and get them adjusted so they align properly.... tighten the bolts... It's a PITA to get all the tines in their proper place... try to figure out some sort of "holding device" to keep them in place before all the bolts are removed... I have done this project and have to do it again... I've put it off for a year or so... Good luck.... if you figure out a device to hold all the tines, take pictures and put them up on this thread.... I'm waiting for your inner genius to get this done.....

DaveOmak, thanks for that! Wasn't sure if possible or not. What did you have to do it for? Is the effort of doing that worth the ~$2000 dollar saving in your opinion?

I picked up a 4 wheel rake.... too wide for my use so I made a 2 wheel rake out of it... Reversed 2 wheels for left side turning... So now I can turn the hay left or right... I just have to swing the support bar to the other side of the tractor.... Most folks won't understand why that was necessary to do... I have 2 fields about 3/4 acres... I have a 14T baler... very small baler and small fields... When turning hay, the windrow moves in the direction of the tractor... I need to move them back into the field... There ain't much room to navigate in a 3/4 acre field...
