Building advice needed

I put up a 30x80 with 16' sidewalls in 1997 that was a pre-engineered building, all steel frame work, metal roof and siding. The only thing I hired out was the concrete work. My wife, two grown sons and I, put this building up in about 5 weeks (mostly on weekends). Rented an all terrain fork lift to help with some of the high work but everything else went pretty smooth. Dollar for dollar I got more sq. ftg under cover with this system and I have been very pleased with the results ( I especially like the clear span). As large as this seemed at the time, there are lots of times that I think about putting up another one except maybe a little larger.

Good luck with ever you decide

I live in Bushnell Florida and am having a Morton building put up this month. All the materials were delivered Tuesday and the construction is supposed to start next week. You are welcome to stop in and take a look. Jim

You said you want it to be 40 feet by 48 feet.

With 40 feet being the shortest distance, your still talking about a pretty good span for wood. Not a big deal, but there is some engineering involved and that price for wooden trusses will be significant.

If you go metal, the 40, or even 48 foot span is nothing.

For your situation and your stated requirements, I think a metal builing on a cement slab is your best solution.

Thanks for all the replies. You've been very helpful in my decision making. I guess I'm going to go with the metal building. I really don't want to redo this project in 15 - 20 years. Know what building materials are going to cost then?

Anyone want to recommend companies to go with or steer clear of? I know there are alot of companies out there selling these buildings and like with any other trade there are the good and the bad.

Holmstead, where can I find out about this Morton Building? If you don't mind what did it run you? I take it you are having them install it for you. Is it not a building that an amateur would attempt? You can PM me if you rather.

Keep the advice and thoughts coming.

Thanks

Morton is a family owned company out of Illinois with factories and sales branches scattered around the country. I dealt with the Morton folks out of Gainesville. You can Google Morton Buildings - nice web site. They are a bit pricey but have a good product with a good warranty. I'm having a 42 x 60 clearspan built. A 14x14 door on each end, an 8 foot overhead door on the side, a couple of windows and walk door under a 40 foot wrap around porch. Building has skylights, gutters/downspouts, functional cupola, ridge vent, 1 foot overhang on sides, 2 foot overhang on front and back. Building seems cheap compared to what the locals want for the cement work!
