Re: Building Garage 30\'x40\'x15\'

Great job!!! No messing around and you really moved quickly.

Was it a prefabed kit?

I've never seen the siding incorperated into a building that large as a structural componet before. Most rely on massive beams to hold everything up, than purlins to attach the siding. This design uses lightweight beams and horizontal sideing. No perlins!!!

Was there a substantial difference in price between this type of metal building versus a more conventional one? Did you price out different kits of the same size?

Re: Building Garage 30\'x40\'x15\'

In my area, W KY, all the metal roofing panel ribs run perpendicular to the ridge & not parallel. Is this something that's commonly done in your area?

Re: Building Garage 30\'x40\'x15\'

Hey Eddie,

I researched the heck out of buildings to purchase through TBN members, the internet, magizines, newspapers, & etc... Each one I found something I liked & some things I didn't care for. The Prices were all close to one another till I found our group that I went with, which I felt both met my "Phlisophy and Pocket Book".

We selected the "Common Box Eave Garage Package"
Unit Size: 30' x 41'.......Wall Height: 12'..........Gauge: 12
Color: Top & Sides, Pewter Gray.......Trim, Quaker Grey
Options: Box Eye Style, 12' Legs, Sides Enclosed, Ends Enclosed, Four 10' x 10' certified roll-up doors, Three headers, One 32" x 72" certified walk-thru door.

Built on concrete level pad with 2 original copies of "Certified Wet Seal Architects Plans."

Now to answer the questions regarding rain drainage. The Concrete Pad is level, the building is also level. But what we did was to raise the North Wall a little up and bolted in place and continued pitching a little bit less and less on each truss and boot connection to the South Wall. When it rains all water will flow off roof to the south side of the building and drain down and away from building as the land slopes down south to our pond.

Re: Building Garage 30\'x40\'x15\'

TwinWillows when I ordered building I didn't think about roof panels and how they ran. I guess I thought that the Architect had that covered. But when I got it I saw that I could have gone with the roof panels either way, but since I didn't request a choice the decision was made for me. I'm happy with the way it is....

Thanks for the thread & pics. Nice job.

Wow, to not have to deal with snow load or frost. What a difference in building design.

Re: Building Garage 30\'x40\'x15\'

Hey Rambler your right I don't have to deal with any snow or frost here in Florida, but we too have some of our own weather issues that we must deal with, #1 concern is hurricanes during the months of June to end of November, and our rainy season is usually early June or July thru September which we could see a large number of inches of rain fall and be concerned with flooding. Most of Florida is sand base ground so our rain usually drains well thru the ground. However Florida's land is mostly at sea level so if you have any land at sea level or below you will be prone to flood in those areas which you know by seeing the looks of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans what that can do.

Last year my home here in South Florida was visited by Hurricane Wilma in Oct. 23, 2005. We just received yesterday March 31, 2006 the Insurance check for that damage at around $59,000. Mostly roof barrel tile and my swimming pool screen enclosure. I lost my beautiful 200' olive tree in our back yard it was broke completely into at the base which was around 40" - 45" round.

I also own a small condo on the beach in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida. On Aug. 13, 2004 Hurricane Charlie came to visit us there. The four story condo building consisting of 112 units lost the entire roof from the storm. It took me a complete year to get it back in the shape that we have now. Again we didn't receive any Insurance till Feb. 2005 for that complete lost.

Both of our storms that hit us came from the West Coast of Florida and by the time it hit us on the East Coast it was somewhere around a CAT 2-3 storm. I know we had at least 120 mph winds here at my home last year. I put up all of our Hurricane storm panels on all of our Doors & Windows openings and I will never forget sitting in my Family Room when the storm was appoaching and lasting four hours seeing the windows in my house where actually breathing in and out. When I saw all of our Sliding Glass doors (3 sets @ 10' each) starting to breath in & out it was then when I got the Family in the SAVE ROOM in the house and I will tell you I was a little bit scared after seeing those windows and remember thats with heavy guage storm panels on them too.

So you can see we have our on weather issues here that we must address. Sorry for the long response, I guess you say it's all that stress finally releasing itself........Oh by the way it's just 60 days from now before Hurricane Season Begins again. Oh GOD, please spare us this year !!!!

Re: Building Garage 30\'x40\'x15\'

Here in MN with the 4' frost, we all have basements in our houses. lots of groundwater to drain, but don't have that sea-level issue, they don't let us build in a flood plain mostly so there is room for the basement.

Spent enough time there wondering if the tornadoes will drop over the years....

Last July we had 90+ mph straight line winds blast through my farm. Somehow the old buildings all stood, there were 3 barns and 2 machine sheds in the neighborhood that blew down, lot of shingle issues. I lost perhaps 1/5 of my grove - I will have firewood for years. I wasn't home at the time, could not go up the driveway with all the trees down, had to drive up behind the grove. Tree roots were sticking out at me, my hay rack was not where I parked it. Oh my, what would I find when I got to the buildings? But, the old 1926 house & 1909 barn & other old sheds took it.

Such things really can put perspective on things, doesn't it? I know what you mean by sitting inside & watching the windows bow. Makes you look at things differently.

Sorry for all your losses, insurance helps but it doesn't really take care of things. The south has sure suffered it's storms the past few years, time for a nice easy year for all.

Your shed must be designed for wind load. It sure looks flimsy for snow load. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif And that roof design would trap all snow, never would fall off. Sure looks like a nice clean install, good work. You had good help. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Building Garage 30\'x40\'x15\'

Big R neat! Great post. Please consider having the concrete finishers come back in 15 to 21 days and cut reliefs in the slab or cracks will develop. May be someone told you this I didn't have time to read every bodies replies. Pouring concrete is my second hobby after farm tractors. I never poor anything greater than a 10 x 15 foot slab, six bag mix, 4.5 inch slump, without expansion joints. I like a high PSI floor in a garage to take the abuse of dropped tools and material. Like I said great post guy!
