Since a few here share my dozer fetish, I thought I would share my treasure. These were posted on the antique caterpillar site awhile back and since it's snowing outside, what better time to share. This is one of 3 specially built D8s left on Antartica still working, the oldest being a 1957 model. The D8s feature stretched frames, 54 inch wide tracks and D9 engines. I'm not sure of this one's name, but it's a good profile. Note the gap between cab and hood...

Just guessing but the wide long tracks probably reduce surface pressure of the machine and also enable it cross crevices or such.
