Bump up lift capacity of L3400/LA463 Loader

/ Bump up lift capacity of L3400/LA463 Loader #61
Anyone considering bumping up their loader capacity who may be concerned about too much extra weight on the front axle may be interested to know that Koyker at Koykermfg.com specifies an L3400 compatible loader with higher capacities than the LA463...

Like:
Lift capacity to max hight at pivot pin... 2030 lbs
Lift capacity to max hight 31.5" forward of pivot pin... 1500 lbs

In theory their engineers and legal people wouldn't let them offer a loader that the tractor couldn't handle with reasonable durability and safety... I bet other manufactures like woods offer loaders with higher capacities than the LA463 also.

Gary,

I didn't think the 2800 would lift to 9 foot. Getting 1200 pounds that high will make it tip prone. Care needs to be taken

Harvest Moon - cough cough {Marketing!} Cough! The after market suppliers don't have to honor the warranty on the equipment. That should tell you something. You can say they allowed you to install it with more than mfg specs, but you are the one responsible. That should tell you more.

john_bud,

I agree completely but I also believe that reputable manufactures of aftermarket implements can't afford to have people destroying their machines and risking life and limb by selling them grossly over matched products.

If they spec. it out as a match it's likely going to be after a careful volley between the marketing department and the legal department with the engineering department in the middle. At least thats what I'd expect from a company like Woods.

My point is only that, a few hundred lbs. over spec. is still probably quite reasonable for an L3400. There is no substitute for good judgment.

I would think you need to seperate between those people who may lift at their max 1-2 times a year versus those whose lift heavy with their tractor every day.

I was out moving snow yesterday with mine and I am going to leave mine at 2750 psi for now. The loader is much more responsive to the controls. I don't believe I am harming my tractor and it just feels great.
I will only occasionally be lifting maximum weights so for me it stays as is for now. Brian

All -

I need to do a one-time lift of a piece of machinery (to put it on its stand/cabinet), and after reading this thread I have a few questions:

At what RPM did you measure your pressure? I generally run my L2800 at PTO speed, not wide-open. For those of you with a gauge, how much pressure difference do you see at PTO as opposed to WOT? I have not problem with running at WOT, but I am curious about the difference.
Regards,
- Just Gary
You can measure your pressure at virtually any speed from idle up and it will be pretty near the same. In a well operating system there is not much internal leakage, so the pump will push enuf fluid to bring the system up to relief pressure even at low rpm. A slight pressure increase happens as rpm rises cuz hyd gpm rises and it takes more pressure to push all that extra flow past the relief. You may get an extra 100psi at full rpm. A little more when the system is cool.

I'm not sure how I missed this thread earlier but I'm glad I found it.

We bought a 3400 in May (still only 30 hrs) & while it wasn't my first tractor, it WAS the first with a loader & I too was a little disappointed with the lift capacity. I had wondered about the system pressure adj. & will check mine.

Thanks to all how took the time to post & also report their experiences.

The front axle on the 2800/3400 is huge compared to the Mahindra's that spec. a higher lift capacity. I agree with Medicshawan...if you only lift above specs. every so often, you should be fine.

I raised mine from 2200 to 2500 psi's, and was able to lift a slab of concrete that I had to drag back to my pond before the mod.:D

I agree with what you have stated. Especially the last bit. But, from experience, the marketing department will do what ever it takes to meet sales targets. The legal department is there to put in the micro-print "blah blah blah" parts and to do the after the fact butt cover dance.

I must be more jaded than you!
