Not trying to be crass here, but what part of "JUNK" do you not understand? :D :D :D
Crass:confused: Ummm..... scotty, At 14 years old, I love to see someone be curious on these type of things. Still lessons to be learned total loss or not. If anything he is being very neighborly by helping out. Better thin playing the wii, surfing the 'net or any video games the rest of his generation is doing. Go on jake, keep us posted, lets see pics of that fixed up guard:D

okay, here is the grill guard... it is a little bent up but it looks pretty good anyway. Its not like its going on a wall, its going on my Tractor. :D I just grinded off the old paint and some rust, took a sledge to straiten sone of it out, and painted it. Pretty simple. It will look great on my Yanmar.

Lookin' good. I'm looking forward to seeing pix of it on the yanny.

BTW, I think you made some solid choices about what was worth playing with and what wasn't!

Jacob:

Seeing those pictures I have to say that Deere died a horrible death. I'm also glad you won't be trying to rehab it as you first thought.

Be careful, that ROPS looks like it would have seen quite a bit of heat at the base. Might twist up like a pretzel if you ever have to use it for what it was designed for.

Don't get me wrong Spruce! I appreciate his enthusiam, and certainly eagerness to learn how things work! A lot like myself as a lad. Just saying that this thread went from a re-build, to parting-out, to puddles of Aluminum, where the transmission used to be! Part of the learning process is learning what's practical, and what's not. Sorry if I came on too strong! Amen on the Video games, Wii, etc. Get out in the 'Shop' where the real (greasy) fun is! ~Scotty

I live by this very strongly even as a kid just on 35 acres...pretty much an island with no other land around it that is not covered in buildings. And I go into that mess daily...

It is an Agric AL-50-C model rototiller.50" width. It appears to be in good shape but I plan to replace the PTO shaft and check inside the gearbox for damage. Ive never seen the inside of a tiller gear box so figuring out what seals i'll need will be a challenge. I also noticed that what probably were 2 bolts are melted so I will have fun taking that apart. Any help I can get with diagrams and such will graetly help with the tiller. I sprayed the tiller off with the hose and noticed there was still some oil on it, is this a good sign? I wanted to use the ROPS on my Simplicity tractor as it does not weigh as much as the tractor it was on and there was a bracket that kept the ROPS from bending or warping. The ROPS still are really strong. When i was taking them off, I was suprised on how light they were. I expected them to be heavier. The bucket is warped on the cutting edge, so I will have to try to bend it back. I want to try to save it and either sell it, use it on my Dad's 3720, or make a mount to put it on my 3 point hitch of my Yanmar. Then i can have an excuse to buy a hydraulic top link. :p

Jacob- Looks like that could be a "Keeper", especially since you've got the data plate! Go to Google.com and search Agric+tiller. ~Scotty

How's that motto go? Nothing Burns Like a Deere!!
Enjoy it, recycle what you can. You can learn a lot from that piece of junk, I wish I had had it when I was 14!!! All I ever came up with were some junk lawnmowers.

sweet! That tiller must not of got too hot. That data plate would have melted away first. Good luck it should be a fun prodject.

Im pretty sure I found the site. webpagetemplate I cant wait to use the tiller in the garden. One thing is since it is a 50" tiller, will my Yanmar be able to handel it?

   / Burned JohnDeere 4100 #54
Nice! If the tag is on the tiller as nh rob said, should be a good candidate for a rebuild. And still having oil on it after the fire is a real good sign that heat was not extreme to 'cook' the gears. Scotty, I did not mean to come on to strong niether:eek: YES! more youth should get out, turn a wrench and get greasy! My granddad bought me a 1/4 dr. socket set when 5 years old, hooked ever since.:D Even after getting in trouble from taking the socket set to school and dismantling parts of playground fence:cool::D

Here is what the grill guard looked like at first. It was rusty and a little warped from the fire. It is still usable. I took the grinder, cleaned it off, used a sledge hammer to bend it strait, then put 2 coats of black rustoleum paint on it. I cant wait to put it on my Yanmar. I just need to make a mount for it. I think it came out pretty good. I only payed $0 for it and its restoration.

Okay, i have the bucket off the tractor. is it useable? It is warped from the heat a bit. i plan to test it out on a JohnDeere 2210 with a 210 FEL to see if it is up to the job of a restoration. If it is, I will have it bent strait, sandblasted, and powder coated JohnDeere green and probably sell it. The problem is, will the metal be strong enough to handel a few hundred more hours of use? Will the soft metal bend if used? I would probably add a replaceable cutting edge to it if it is marketable. but I want to make sure i can before i put my money into it. I need the money from it right now to build my invention, so I hope it is fixable.

Personally, I would be hesitent to sell something which had been through a fire and couldn't guarantee to be good. I would always wonder if I gave them a good deal or sold them a piece of junk. It would bug me over time.

Did your neighbor happen to mention why he didn't replace it with another John Deere? Just curious.

G'day jacob good to see a young one enthused, as all have noted before the tiller will prob o/haul as good as new hopefully you can get a repair manual for the gearbox so as to get the correct preload and backlash for the gearbox. Shame the tractor was so badly destroyed but you can still learn from pulling it to bits especially if you have never been inside one before:D. As for the bucket you can straighten it up but i think that the heat would have softened the steel too much if you can fit it up to your tractor you might be able to try it out a bit and see if it is going to hold up to use before you sandblast and paint. Good luck :)

Yeah, the implements are still sitting there but eventualy I will start to work on them. I am going to test the bucket before spending $$$ on it. If it isnt marketable, i can find a way to use it on my tractors or my dad's tractor.
