I often use old oil on my burn pile. I have a hydraulic fluid change coming up soon for my tractor -- does (Kubota UDT) HF burn anywhere near as well for that purpose? Thanks.

I don't know what the flash points are and can't really say whether the UDT burns as well as motor oil, but I sure used mine for that purpose and it definitely burned.;)

Great, thanks Bird. First time that I ever did my burn pile back in the day, I used 5 gallons of gasoline and it more exploded than burned.

One other quick question -- do you use 10W-30 or 10W-40 oil with the Texas heat?

Yep, I've used gasoline, but very, very cautiously. That can be plumb scary.

For motor oil, I used Delo 500 in the 15W-40 weight. I know Kubota was behind on updating their manuals. Mine still called for CC/CD (obsolete) rated 10W-30, but everyone I knew personally, including the dealers, used 15W-40 motor oil in diesels. By far the most popular were Chevron's Delo 500 and Shell's Rotella. But of course, there are certainly other good oils, including synthetics.

yes it burns just like any other hydraulic fluid. It's much safer than Gasoline to start a brush pile and in most states not defined as an accelerant although it can be considered as hazardous waste oil if tested and metals are present.

I also use mine, mixed half and half, with bar oil for chainsaw lube. Works well.

.
The tip of a Cat Tail slightly dipped in gas makes a good way to light gasoline back from a safe distance.

Another way is take a kitchen mach and drop it down the barrel of an empty BB gun . and fire the mach into a dry cement block or brick placed at the source of the gasoline to be ighnited.
The match hits the block or brick and the impact ignights the match and the match lights the gas/

I recently was over at my neighbors when he was starting his burn pile. It was raining and i thought he would never keep it going. He used a back pack sprayer with diesel fuel and just walked the flame all the way around the pile. I was surprised that the flame did not follow its way back to the sprayer.
