burying wire with subsoiler advice

I understand the debate between using conduit and direct burial and that is fine ,my question is how do you attach the conduit to your subsoiler and pull it with out filling it with dirt ? I know you could use tape and drill a hole in the pipe and tape it closed but there seems to be better ways? Also Gabby can you expound on how you pull PVC conduit ? do you use 20 ft sticks glued together and if so how long can you pull without putting in a splice box? Do you have problems when you try to turn a curve?

Tks

Make a pulling head out of a PVC cap with a hole drilled in it. Put an eye bolt through the hole, add a washer and a nut inside the cap and you're ready to pull. Glue it to the pipe and plow away, just cut it off about 2 feet long when you're done so you can re-use the pulling head section.

I have pulled 900 continuous feet of 1-inch PVC.

Curves aren't a problem, just curve away.

I made a dry run first with the subsoiler. Then I attach pvc to subsoiler ( however you do this is up to you. Tape end of PVC to prevent dirt from entering PVC. Have a helper to"help" PVC . Lay out PVC with staring end at beginning of trench. Pull it in . No problem, just like pulling in a piece of UF wire. I agree to use PVC. If it needs replaced, it can be easily done .

You guys are lucky. My inspector would never approve line voltage wire at only 18".

This is the wacky gadget i built to pull in my phone line . Telstra would not do the job because of erosion problems with my sandy soil . So i said i would do it . I borrowed the Poly Pipe ripper when i bought the roll of pipe pictured , tack welded it to the bottom of the bucket and put the roll of wire between the lift arms and used a piece of pipe for the axle . The Telecom guy was skeptical and said he would walk beside me to see how i was going . He went 20' and said i was doing a better job than they could :D . The jib on the back and the old winch on the bucket have nothing to do with the ripper . They are what i used to lift the poles for my house .

I wish I could see a video of this in action. You guys describe it and yet I guess I'm one of those guys that has to see it to finally understand it.

I suppose I could take a piece of rope and trying burying it just for learning how to do this. I'd hate to wreck a piece of wiring at today's prices.

What does work well is the way i got my power wire up to the house . I first pulled in a 100' of Poly Pipe and then blew a parachute up the line with a string attached . I then pulled the power wire up the pipe . I only used Black pipe which is probably dangerous , someone later might cut it thinking it's water . If you can buy Orange pipe it would be better .

I am new to this site, and have really enjoyed reading all the opinions and knowledge on this website!

Joe48,

You said that you have pulled up to 18" deep with a subsoiler. I would like to pull some flexible 3/4" pipe that deep to supply a "garden shed" that I am building for the wife.

I am a newbie to tractors and their implements. Does it depend on the subsoiler as to the depth it will "cut?" Or, are all subsoilers not created equally?

Thanks guys!

Yes there is a difference. There could be a difference between manufacturers, the size of compact (super compact vs compact) tractor it's designed for and probably most noteably, whether the attachment is a middle-buster subsoiler combo or strictly a subsoiler (sometimes called a chisel plow). I'd suggest you look at a few and select the one with the longest beam below the 3-pt lower-link attachement points.

You said you were going to pass and let the pros do it. This is one area where you can save money and do it yourself. Electricians charge a lot do do burial work.

hi,
Gustav forced me to bury the cable TV line. This was put together with scrap odds and ends. The cutting knife was a BushHog blade found on the roadside and sharpend all the way up. That is 1" Galv Pipe, the bottom bend was enough. Check out the high tech anti-chaffing feed guide at the top of pipe (qt plastic oil spout).
It worked great, burrying the super duty coax the cable company left, the depth was 18" +/- . It left minimal disturbance to grass, a bigger tractor would have been a plus.

Good Luck
Rhett

For those of you that are skeptical, make several passes and lower the subsoiler each time until you are ripping at the depth you want to bury the PVC, or direct burial wire, but you must consider the fact that if pulling direct burial wire, that you still may snag the wire on something, so therefore, I would recommend puling the wire and PVC. I would also put some foam in both ends of the line to keep out water.

I would dig a hole at the starting spot, and a 6 ft ramp leading down to the bottom of the hole, and when you start to pull, have someone hold the PVC pipe down in the hole.

Subsoiler adapter.

I welded a chain link to the subsoiler, and then attaching a small length of chain, welded to a 3/4 in galv pipe cap, and screwed the PVC pipe into this for water pipe, and for wire and PVC, add the correct size coupler and bring the wire out of a side hole and tape good. If you are going to be doing this often, I would make pipe adapters to fit the pipe you are pulling. I made several bullet head or mole adapters larger than the pipe, and they expand the dirt and make pulling the pipe easier.

Happy pulling.
