Bush Hog gear box oil change

How often should you change the gearbox oil on a rotary mower? Are they like rear ends and only do it if it get water in there and at the interval??

at least ever couple ecades.. or when dry or wet..

if you went by book spec you might see a 600 hr interval.. etc..

I check mine for water every spring and change it as needed.. I got lucky and 4 bolts hold the top of the gear box on, so it is easy to access.. When it needs to be changed I just suck it out as best as possible, soak the rest up with a rag, and then refill

Just don't over fill them.

I try to do it at the end of every season though sometimes I go two seasons, It always looks good coming out. Rather have it running smooth than not running at all

+1 Try to catch mine at the start of every season, but don't always happen

my jd hogs have top covers that come off.. that's a plus!

Get fully synthetic gear oil. (available at Advance auto)Then check it yearly and change it every 5 years.

it's oil, just depends on how it is made or refinded or blemded as to if it is fully synthetic or hydrocracked.. etc...
